  1. Azusa Pacific’s Mandrell Worthy was named the PacWest Southern California Player of the Week for his performance in two Cougar victories. On Saturday he scored a career high 26 points, had 5 rebounds and 2 blocks in a 67-61 win over Concordia. 
  2. The Angels suspended pitching coach Mickey Callaway in the wake of a report in which five women accused Callaway of lewd behavior.

  4. Kansas City Chiefs receiver Sammy Watkins said he is optimistic about playing Sunday in Super Bowl LV against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Watkins has missed the last two playoff games with a calf injury.

  9. On this date in 2002 the New England Patriots beat the St. Louis Rams 20-17 in Super Bowl XXXVI in the Louisiana Superdome. Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was named MVP.  
  10. Former Boston Red Sox/ Angels outfielder and El Monte Alum Fred Lynn turns 69 today.
