One Year Ago: Carlton Promoted to Head Coach at APU

As our “One Year Ago” series continues Rudy Carlton, who was the offensive coordinator at Azusa Pacific, was promoted to head football coach on February 4, 2020. However Carlton never got the chance to coach a single game as Azusa Pacific dropped the football program in December.

(Glendora) – Rudy Carlton, who has served as the offensive coordinator at Azusa Pacific for the last 10 years, has been promoted to head football coach Athletic Director Gary Pine announced Monday.

Carlton takes over for Victor Santa Cruz, who resigned last week after 14 years as HC to take the DC position at Hawaii, his alma mater.

Carlton becomes the tenth head coach in program history. Carlton played quarterback for the Cougars from 2002-2007 before joining the coaching staff in 2008 and then taking over as OC.

“This an emotional day for me because of the time I have spent at Azusa Pacific and how much this place means to me,” Carlton said Monday. “I have seen this program from every vantage point possible and to now have the honor of leading it is a day I have dreamed of.”

    Watching libs’ heads explode. Yeah, that’s a sound polity: taking joy in such thing is a sure sign of immaturity and toxicity.

    @GHT,
    What does your post have to do with APU. What a slap, you must be one of those guys!!! Pioneer coach has nothing to do with this story, go hide back under your rock.

    It really stings that APU waited until now to announce Carlton. Trump wanted a young go-getter football coach to introduce during his SOTU speech, as proof that he has restored the American spirit. There was to be a Medal of Freedom award, along with a Burger King meal in the oval office. I guess we’ll have to wait ’till next year, when the new Pioneer coach will be the obvious choice for this honor.
