Brus Buries Bulldogs

Braydon Brus scored twice for Glendora

By Alex Gonzalez

West Covina — Braydon Brus celebrated his birthday Friday night by scoring two touchdowns, one rushing, and a pick-six, and Noah Acuna scored three rushing touchdowns in Glendora’s 33-7 blowout win against the West Covina Bulldogs at West Covina high school.

“I’m happy, man. It was a good team win. We came together, played well together,” Brus said after the game. “Overall, we played well. We played well together.”

The Tartans opened the game by scoring their first three possessions, with all three scores coming from the ground game.

Acuna scored the game’s first touchdown after taking the handoff and bulldozed his way for six from four yards out, capping an eight-play drive.

Then after Matt Gonzales hauled in a one-handed catch for 27 yards that put Glendora at the two-yard line, Acuna doubled dipped for his second score on their ensuing possession, giving Glendora a 14-0 lead just before the first quarter ended.

After a turnover-on-downs possession by the Bulldogs, the Tartans extended their first-half lead to 20 when Brus capped their series just one-minute after the teams switched possessions in the second quarter.

West Co tried to answer back on their last possession of the half and marched down to the Glendora 18. That was the closest the Bulldogs got to the end zone and came up empty after the team elected to go for it on fourth down and went backward.

Following intermission, West Covina created a little momentum when Drew Hall intercepted Jake Denerson’s pass, but the offense fumbled three plays later, giving possession back to the Tartans.

Glendora’s defense continued to suffocate West Co in the second half by sacking Wyatt Oak and stuffing their running attack. Then Brus added salt to injury when he picked off Oak’s pass and returned it to the house, giving the Tartans a 27-0 lead with 5:37 left in the third quarter.

“Our defensive coordinator, TP, put together a great scheme, it worked really well, and obviously, I was able to get that pick six because of that,” Brus said.

After Acuna scored his third rushing touchdown of the night, the Bulldogs avoided a shutout on their last possession of the contest when Oak faked the handoff and found Jason Chang running the drag, who took it 39 yards for the score.

Glendora looks to stay undefeated with the win when they travel to Ontario, where they will play Colony. As for West Covina, they look to bounce back when they in-city rival South Hills.
