(Montebello) – David Padilla led the way for the Oilers in their 36-22 victory over Bell Gardens Friday night at Montebello High School.

Montebello got the ball first on their own three yard line and on the second play of the game QB Andre Maldonado stepped out of bounds in the endzone giving the Lancers a 2-0 lead on the safety.

Bell Gardens, on a short field after the free kick, ran the ball and capped it off with a nine yard jet sweep from Albert Gomez to make it 9-0.

Montebello got on the board with the first play off the second quarter when running back Samuel Rodriguez took it in from 14-yards out and the two point conversion was good make it a 9-8 game.

The Lancers pounded the ball down the field again and this time QB Agustin Velasquez would finish it with a seven yard run making it a 15-8 lead.

The lead didn’t last long as Maldonado scored on a three yard run tying the game 15-15 halftime.

Rodriguez would find the endzone two more times for the Oilers, one on a 25-yard touchdown reception and a three yard run making it 29-15 early in the fourth.

Lancers cut into the lead when Jason Cuevas made circus catch on a 30-yard pass putting the game at 29-22.

Padilla after setting up all the scores would finally get in the endzone himself when Maldonado found him wide open and Padilla took it to paydirt making it 36-22 after the extra point.

The former Rosemead Panther Padilla finished with five receptions for 165-yards and a score. Michael Burgos chipped in with 60-receiving yards and big kick return for Montebello.

Maldonado went 11 of 15 for 260-yards in the air and 48-yards rushing on 10-carries to go with a passing and rushing touchdown, he also had a interception on defense.

Velasquez went 7 of 17 for 94-yards for the Lancers with a touchdown and interception.

Montebello will possibly finish their season next week at Schurr, while Bell Gardens waits to play Schurr in two weeks.

@Cmon guy, your correct, it really would’ve been Rosemeads year, but Covid-19 ensued on persons making the decisions to cancel the season and look
at both ex-panthers via Rosemead Rebels are well on there way in contributing dramatically for their respective teams.

Or Padilla played at a school that’s not playing football so he went to Montebello cause they’re having a season. Like Ostray is at LC.
