(Arcadia) – Brandon Nguyen belted a two-run home run in a three run bottom of the seventh inning but it wasn’t enough as Arcadia came up a buck short in a 5-4 loss to El Segundo Saturday night at Giambrone Field.

The Apaches, down 5-1 and seemingly dead entering the bottom of the seventh got off the floor for three. Alex Dolan singled to right off reliever Trevor Steele, took second on a groundball to short and scored when a long fly ball to left off the bat of Mikey Easter was misplayed allowing Easter to take second. With two out Brandon Nguyen hit one out on to Duarte Road beyond the right field fence for a two run bomb. Just like that it was 5-4. But Steele was able to strike out Danny Chavez to end it.

Arcadia took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Chavez singled, took second on a balk, advanced to third on a base hit by Ari Nurhadia and came home on a fielder’s choice on a ball hit by Zachary Huerta.

El Segundo got even in the third When Jack Stoker walked, took second on catcher’s interference and scored on an error.

After taking a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning on an error and a base hit, El Segundo opened it up with three more in the sixth. In the inning Julian Rodriguez walked and Kenny Chung singled. Both runners advanced on an error. Rafael Smith singled to drive in one run and a single by Lloyd Sapanza brought home another. Smith then scored on a ground out.

Arcadia then got close but no cigar.

Julian Eskridge started for the Apaches and worked five and one-third innings. He struck out nine and allowed four hits before being relieved by Harrison Meyers. Eskridge was hurt by some shoddy defense.

For the Eagles Sapanza went five plus innings, fanned five and allowed just one run. Steele worked the last two innings and gave up the three runs in the seventh.

The Apaches fell to 8-3 overall with the loss while El Segundo improved to 6-8. Next up for Arcadia is a home game Monday against Pacific League opponent Glendale.
