@ Great Move: You took what could’ve been a great post and ruined it with an unnecessary and extremely dismissive remark.
Public schools are obligated to provide instruction for everyone who doesn’t have the means or the athletic prowess to be admitted to a private school, and I’m talking about a large majority of the population.
High school sports provide valuable learning and skill-building opportunities in their own right, but they’re secondary to the overall instructional program, at least at public schools.
As a substitute teacher, I carry out actual lesson plans that are left by the regular instructors, and I develop lesson plans on my own when necessary. Speaking for myself, I’m not into babysitting while I’m on taxpayer-supported time.

The hiring of Dean Herrington is in sharp contrast to the musical chairs being played-out at most other locations. The ultimate reason is that, as a private school, St. Francis MUST have a good football program to attract paying customers, whereas the publics get an automatic grant from the nanny state to run their babysitting operations.
