(Temple City) – It’s been a long strange off season for Temple City. First year Coach Anthony White resigned to take the head coaching job at Buena Park. Then During a lengthy hiring process to bring in a new coach a couple players transferred out. Finally Mike McFarland was named Head Coach in the middle of May and by the end of the month it was official.
Now, after all that, the Rams are ready to get down to business. Temple City has been out for spring workouts for about four weeks now but only two with McFarland. Considering all that has happened, the turn out hasn’t been too bad.
“We have about 70 players out right now. They started working out before I came on so they haven’t missed too much,” McFarland said.
McFarland, who spent last year as the HC at Pasadena, was offered a teaching position as well at Temple City.
“That was huge. Otherwise I would still be out looking for a job,” McFarland said.
Calvin Copping, who might have been slated as the starting quarterback taking over for the graduated Justin Smith, has decide to concentrate on baseball leaving that position in a quandary.
“It’s going to be a work on progress,” McFarland said.
The Rams do have so me talent returning in junior linebacker Carlos Mota, senior running back Josh Simangunsong and O-lineman Josh Robles. Wide receiver Andrew Anda also figures into the TC offensive plan.
In the Rio Hondo league it figures to be Monrovia’s world in 2010. With San Marino and La Canada improving as well, Temple City and McFarland have their work cut out.
Friday was Temple City’s last workout before the beginning of the dead period. The Rams will take the next three weeks off before coming back after July 4.
