Let’s put this “Cal will beat La Serna” comedy to rest. Zamora and crew gave their best effort against ER a dozen days ago, and clearly fell short of the mark needed to make the playoffs. THAT game was the only one that mattered out of the 20 being played in league this season. That took all the air out of Cal’s figurative balloon…you know it, I know it-even Biden knows it-(without a teleprompter).
@rom Why are numbers so low in program. Alhambra going to be able to finish the year at some point it becomes a safety issue only having 26 players not considering any injuries and having depth.
@ Alexander Bonilla: It’s really beginning to look that way. The Schurr Spartans hit hard, and they have a formidable offense when they’re not fumbling the ball away. The Spartans will give San Gabriel all it can handle if they can play a good game from start to finish.
@ A-Town: I already answered that question on another thread, so I’m not going to indulge your gloating here. Your favorite QB had a deeper, more experienced, and more physical supporting cast around him at Alhambra than Michael Gonzalez does now. Those factors make all the difference in the world, and you should know that.
@ Anonymous (talking about the Alhambra coaching staff): Nope; you’re totally wrong about that. This is mostly the same staff that coached up an unheralded freshman quarterback and his equally unheralded teammates, and made it possible for them to go 8-2 and 12-1 in consecutive seasons.
@ Question Mark: You’re usually on the mark, but I believe the Moors could have two more wins in their near future. I think you’re low-balling Alhambra at 2-8.
@ In Memoriam: I’m paraphrasing a lot of different people when I say that your reporting on the demise of the AHS football program is premature.
@ Anonymous (discussing Alhambra’s battle with attrition): You are absolutely right. By the end of Friday night’s game, we were down to maybe 20 players who were still physically able to play.
@ Moor town: I agree with you, except that you have to give those principals who “came from Keppel” a lot of credit.
Duane Russell was the principal at AHS when the team went 8-2 in 2018, and Marisa Palacios was in charge in 2019, when the team compiled a record of 12-1. Both of them were highly supportive of our players and the coaching staff. Duane still comes to our games, even though he’s now at the district office.
@ LOL: Very well said!
@ “Alhambra High”: I’m sure that Jacob Ochoa is happy to be the head coach at Glendale. I wish him success there.
@ AUSD & Anonymous: No, I haven’t been banned. (Not yet, anyway.)
It took me a while to get on board this weekend because: 1) I had to report our stats to the coaching staff; 2) The stats had to be posted on MaxPreps; 3) I had a story to write about Friday night’s game; and 4) I have a life outside of work and high school football.
But it’s nice to know that you care.
Being an on campus educator and a head football coach is no plum job. I’m sayin coach Eric is not getting free haircuts, invited over for dinner and having his supper tab comped like on Friday Night Lights. You still have a full slate of classes to teach and papers to grade plus deal with team angry parents and crazy relatives, plus co-ordinate the coaching staff, plus make sure your players are attending class and making grades, plus making sure all are adhering to Covid protocols, plus practice year round now plus playing on weekend nights plus working for free and somehow…..finding time for wife and kids. You sure you clowns want to mad dog your coach?
@The Ranch18, nah it won’t even be close. Cal was exposed by El Rancho. La Serna has won 5 games in a row and is hitting on all cylinders now. Tough nonleague schedule and now rolling they’ll be tough to stop. Not a LS fan but just speaking truth here
DelRioFan
Y’all keep sleeping on Cal …. If They are healthy come Friday … it won’t be as easy as you think …
I wish This game was on a Thursday …
Moor fans don’t understand that there’s only 26 players on the team. Not sure why the numbers are so low but given that coach Eric is doing the best he can with what his got. I understand we are used to the good old days under Gil but hard to complete with only 26 players on a team. Really hard to understand why the numbers are so low as coach Eric is an on campus teacher and the last two years (excluding COVID year) were successful
TADA! The SGV is #1 if you flip the Cal preps CIF ratings upside down. Of the 372 SS CIF football teams rated by cal preps the bottom 72 teams are well represented by the SGV. Led by #1 Workman we find once formidable teams like El Monte, Alhambra, Azusa, Rowland, La Puente and many more SGV teams populating the bottom of the rankings and playing to unseat Workman as #1. I mean we do have many in the top 25 in upside rankings. Such perennials teams like Pioneer, Keppel, Temple City, Mountain View, these teams are fighting for upside down #1 every season. They are our own Alabama’s in reverse.I mean what the heck is going on. Their cheer leaders have taken to wearing hoodies when they cheer for these teams. The bands refuse to march and fans ask for their money back in the 50-50 raffles. Workman looks to have the #1 spot locked up this year but Alhambra is making a serious move down the ladder.
Bring Jacob back to Alhambra
Anyone know what’s happening at Colony? They looked like the real deal in the summer and now they’re 1-5.
Ron has been banned from the mid valley sports blog until further notice
Has @ron been told to say off the massage board by Alhambra
CORRECTION Carlos Hernandez only attended Cathedral NOT Arcadia as you stated. His plans were NEVER to play for Alhambra, after the false promises they made to his brother and to other athletes. It’s a waste of time and effort.
Two local coaches made their bones relying on one player. Jessie Ciniceros did it for over decade. He rode the Penny family over at Norwalk forever making them take his team deep into the playoffs every year. Then he went to El Monte and rode Devon Booth for years. All these studs almost never left the field while he was coaching. Dale Ziola got his name in the papers because of one guy, Tyler Nevins and rode him to the corral every Friday night. Again never took him out. Without Nevins you would not know of… Dale who? He’s the guy coaching Covina looking for his next horse. That said if Johnson is not 100% take away his helmet. Too valuable a kid.
Yeah ok, Cal couldn’t cover ER’s Jimenez and he burned them for 4 touchdowns with Petifny and Johnson. George is a way better receiver. When you rely on one player to carry the load for your offense if he is stymied much like ER did or he gets hurt Cal is done. Which is what happened. Not gonna work against La Serna. They’re much better than Cal and ER
@Pac 5 Scout
This ain’t 7 on 7. Let’s see if you guys can even stop the run game first. We know that this will be the Superbowl for you guys… To LS though it’s just another league game.
That’s an incredibly bold prediction, is Vance even recovered from being knocked out of the game against the Dons? If Cal Hi manages to beat LS if Im the ranch I lock down the DRL on Friday and ride my bench vs LS. Really would have no benefit going 10-0 if Cal beats LS.
@ Pac 5: Sure, Cal is going to beat La Serna. In other news, the sun will fail to rise tomorrow morning, the national debt will be paid-off in five years, and Pioneer will play Mater Dei for the national championship. @Rams fan: agreed that Temple City has passed on, but the cemetery ran out of spots, so a burial at sea is being arranged.
Lmao who’s going to Cathedral to play football it’s been a dumpster fire after Kevin Pearson left. Kevin has the show rolling at warren getting kids recruited and scouted
Medrano has taken El Rancho from diapers to training underwear and then to big boy pants.
@In Memorium
Please add Temple City to the list. They’ve been bad for so long it’s hard to remember when they were good. But 52-0 to a weak ass San Marino is a new low. Say what you will but demographics killed football at TC.
Okay you heard it here first. Cal is going to beat La Serna. Zamora has figured it out. He has a real horse, time to ride him. Instead of giving Johnson 14 carries a game give him 32.Lots of first downs and lots of time off the clock. Instead of two receptions give him 5. With 3 punt and kickoff returns those 40 touches will do it. When the Lancers are busy doubling Johnson Petigny comes open as well. The kid catches everything and is fast. On defense cover the coaches kin George, he has to throw to him alot, he’s his nephew. Cover him with Petigny and Johnson over the top. Guarentee two easy picks. Coach George will be slow to go to his other guys. If Petigny and Johnson can hold up Zamora takes the Lancers down.
Or maybe the kids are leaving because of the coaching because cathedral isn’t any good. No kids were leaving under Gil’s leadership they were actually coming in
The almont league will be dead in a few years.
Alhambra and BG only had about 25 players total on the squad. BG used to have 40-50 kids easily. Alhambra too. Maybe it’s time for the Whitmont to manifest again ??
@TE
I never call for someone’s job, but I must agree with you. This loss is squarely on he coaches for the lack of preparation and for the Zero in game adjustments to Arroyo putting everyone in the box and continually trying to run these same 3 run plays to the exact same side. Very frustrating. SEM has talent and should not lose a league game this badly with the players they have. Hats off to Arroyo but SEM lost this game during the preparation phase they just weren’t prepared. And that falls squarely on the coaches.
Let’s not forget rosemead 77-6, it was 42-0 after the first quarter. We know the real game is coming up with arroyo
I urge everyone to observe a moment of silence for the Cathedral, Alhambra, Santa Fe, Montebello and South El Monte football programs. May they rest in peace.
There’s a new principal at Alhambra that doesn’t come from keppel like the previous ones. His an USC guy so should know the importance of the impact of having a good football program has on a school overall. Having good football team lifts morale around campus gives a different vibe.
You guys begging for coaches to get fired are a joke. You seriously think great coaches are lining up to coach at the Alhambra and South El Monte, Especially nowadays where there’s already tons of coaching openings every year and positions that go unfilled until months before the season.
If you guys are such experts why don’t you go coach somewhere and stop being the biggest haters for the supposed school you support. With parents and fans like you it’s no wonder these schools struggle for success.
In sure you are the same type that as soon as your son doesnt get favoritism you are looking for the first assignment coach on another team to say we have a starting spot for you on our team if you transfer.
You guys talk about Alhambra and what the record is without the transfer QB. You ever stop and think what it would be if he stayed? And if Issac Hernandez stayed? And if Carlos Hernandez went to Alhambra instead of Cathedral and Arcadia before going to Monrovia? You want to fire the coaching staff but if the kids that are supposed to go to Alhambra would actually go to Alhambra things might be different. Alhambra was up 16-0 with 29 kids on their sideline. While schurr was scrambling with 50 kids. That’s a great coaching job in my book. As coach Gil would say “refuse to lose!!” They got my respect after tonight.
Lets give the stat man a break. Only if the head coach was as devoted,,,
Alhambra’s only two wins this year will be against -50 rated teams. And it was not like the teams that pounded them were powerhouses, they were not. None of them had even a plus power rating. All minus teams. Alhambra, Keppel, Temple City and Sierra Vista might be a good league.
@ron stat man
So do you Believe us now? We need a new coaching staff? Alhambra sucked before Noah and they suck again. So that’s telling a lot about the staff. Coach Eric has been there 9 yrs and only 2 winning seasons! Shameful. Offensive and defensive coordinator always making bad decisions, it’s like Coach Pop Warner!
And second half.
It’s time to get rid of their HC two years too late. Should of been gone after the 2018 season. He’s always with some kind of excuses on why yo take it easy on them. And DD I told you they didn’t have a chance.
@ron can you give us our record without our transfer qb?
Great job by the Alhambra defense 😂😂😂😂😂
28 6 Bg
Lol be more original thats a Bell Gardens chant lol
21-0 Arroyo leading SEM at halftime. The wrong team showed up for SEM in that first half.
La Puente vs Bassett cancelled LP COVID protocol..
you’re talking about SF the once great program now in shambles. I guess it happens to all programs. Let hope they can rebound. I HOPE DRL gets better and not one team dominates.
One has to take into account that after all these lopsided scores the game had a running clock and the winning team pulled its best players. If the winning team wanted many of these slaughters could be 120-0. Maybe if you want better and fairer competition re-leagueing should occur after week 4 and releague using cal-preps power rankings and not wait for playoffs. But that makes CIF jokers have to work to hard. It will take them away from counting money and beer parties.
@theranch18 .. of course you were hoping La Serna wouldn’t be who everyone in league thinks they are but… they are and The hidden valley Ranch is about to get a reality check in a few weeks. Just have some class when LS is up 55-0, last night almost could have ended in a brawl SF has lost whatever “class” it had left and the tradition is completely LOST.. kinda sad
SG a real threat in the almont they have rebuilt the program after the dumpster fire Jude left, followed by bad coaching hires good to see because there’s talent at SG not just in football but other sports but seems like they don’t find the right coaches
Looks like SG vs Schurr for almont league title.
@TheRanch18
SF #9 and #42 are cheap shot punks on defense. Would have put up 80 if we didn’t pull starters in early 3rd qtr. Get in #9s head and he starts throwing hands. Hope you guys demoralize them.
I would not want to be a La Canada player, first a 60 point loss to Monrovia and now a one point loss to So Pas.. Gonna be some wind sprints liberally handed out on Monday, followed by an hour of tackling drills, Or is that too old school stuff for today’s woke teen.
La Canada might just find themselves on the outside looking in at the end of league play like every year for the past decade.. Look for that Cal Preps rating to crash.
Yikes, Great Expectations is not just for English Class at LCHS.
SG u know
San Gabriel / Koppel score?
Wow!!!
Muir came to play! Thought Arcadia would give a better game .
Pasadena taking care of business as expected
La Serna – I was hoping SF would give better battle …
