@ron CIF needs to separate the privates from the public schools or let it be free game no recruiting violations

@ “Alhambra”: I’m not worried about Robert at all. I discussed the coach in a hypothetical manner, but at least two of the other commenters on this thread actually want him to be the head coach or offensive coordinator at AHS.
I’m philosophically opposed to high school athletic programs recruiting athletes who are already playing for teams at other high schools. In my opinion, it’s a form of theft.
However, there’s a distinction between actively poaching players from other schools on one hand, and accepting an occasional voluntary (and legal) transfer on the other.
To my knowledge, Raul Cortez voluntarily transferred to Alhambra from L.A. Wilson before playing at AHS his senior year. He certainly helped make that freshman quarterback look good in 2018, when we went 8-2, but that QB also had a junior named Vito Russell to throw to.
By the way, Coach Bergstrom’s best year was actually 2019, when AHS was 12-1. Our former quarterback had Vito, Kody Chuang, and Vidhan Gurung as his top receivers that season. They all made big plays for us.
The Alhambra teams of 2018 and 2019 were also very good defensively. Football is a team sport; it has never been about just one or two guys.

@ Anonymous: Private schools, whether they are religion-based or secular, should be placed in their own separate leagues and playoff divisions because those schools have no attendance boundaries.
If CIF had the courage to do that, then we could adopt an enforceable ban on recruiting (or poaching of players) by public-school athletic programs.
I’ve always thought that the solution is a simple one; it just takes the will to implement it.

@ron why you worried about Robert bringing recruits when coach Eric’s best year who was on the roster a transfer from la Wilson and a freshman qb what has he did since.

@ron and Peterson you can look at what has happened here at Sierra vista the administration left the football program in disarray coach Matt and Sergio built it up and got fired and look were the program is now. Another example is basset when coach hector built it up and then left the administration drive the football program back to the ground and now they rehired hector to bring it back.

Yes, Tim, I’m aware of the fact that Coach Maxie was the offensive coordinator at Arcadia. But, people get promoted to higher positions all the time.
“Anonymous” was rather unclear in his original post to begin with. When he said, “Bring Robert Maxie to Alhambra and run it back,” wouldn’t that statement give people the impression he wanted Maxie to be the head coach?
Anyway, there are athletic programs where individuals other than the head coach appear to be making the most important moves. I get that, too.

Alhambra needs run the triple option with how the defense just gives points to the other team. Let the offense take up time and limit how long the defense is out there.

@ Anonymous: Let’s say, for the sake of argument, that Robert Maxie is brought in to coach at Alhambra. Then, when he inevitably departs, he’ll leave behind a program that’s in disarray, just like he did when he left Arcadia.
I’d rather have a stable program, even if it’s a little less flashy, instead of an up-and-down roller-coaster ride. And, yes, academics should come first at a high school; I just happen to believe that extracurricular activities, including sports, are also valuable parts of the experience.
From T. Peterson: Two things. 1. Maxie wasn’t the head coach at Arcadia so any players that came in etc. would have been approved by the head coach or even administration.
    2. Let’s say, for the sake of argument, that he was responsible for all of the comings and goings of players at Arcadia like you insinuated. How did he leave the program in disarray? They went to the CIF Finals when he was there. They were a great program. At Pasadena, with Maxie as the OC, the Bulldogs are one the best teams in the valley. This guy has done a great job. And again he’s not the HC…so he doesn’t sign off on any and all transfers. He makes players better and improves the teams he is a part of. That’s what coaches should do.

Not sure why everyone by hating on coaches like Matt, Robert, Jude, Anthony white and the James brothers they may recruit talent but they all have improved the high school team and record were they coach. Granted there has been some issues but when you playing against these private schools you need to try to get every advantage you can get. Nobody has a problem with Amat or Damien recruiting. But when These other schools do it there’s a problem

Come on @ron let’s bring Robert as head coach let the brothers play like old times when we had Darian, Mitchell Crockom, and peko or before them with Zion, brown and company. With Robert’s offensive mind will bring the old winning days to Alhambra and we will have more than 26 players on the roster.

@ A-Town: The numbers of athletes going out for football have been generally declining for a long time. At Alhambra, several of Gil Ruedaflores’ teams in the early 2000’s had rosters of fewer than 40 players. But, declining participation has affected high school football programs throughout Southern California, and not just Alhambra’s.
I believe that Duane Russell understood the contribution strong athletic teams make to academics and to the overall culture at a high school. After all, he was the head football coach at Mark Keppel two decades ago.
I can’t speak knowledgeably as to Ms. Palacios’ stance on the issue, but she was supportive of the football program and attended the games during the time she was principal.
Having said all that, it’s clear to me that the primary purpose for having schools in the first place is to promote the academic development of our young people. That idea, some might say, is a “no-brainer.”

The football numbers are low as academics have taken priority under the two previous principles that were from keppel. Russell liked sports but has focus was on improving Alhambra academics as they were good but not great. The interesting part is that these administrators don’t understand the benefits good athletics programs have on academics.

@ron for some who calls someone else’s comments ignorant you made some about Robert maxie. His offense produce and it gets kids college scholarships that they want to play for him doesn’t mean he recruits. Every kid out is looking for the coach that is going to get him to the next level and some do a better job of getting kids noticed. Times have changed kids going to the local high school are over they are going to were they believe a coach will help them get noticed.

@ The Answer is: The answer is that you just made some incredibly ignorant remarks. Coach Bergstrom is in his early 40’s, and the majority of the coaches on his staff are even younger than he is. Your definition of “oldsters” is way off.
I have worked with Coach Bergstrom on numerous occasions while subbing in the Alhambra High P.E. department, and I can honestly tell you that he communicates well and has good rapport with the vast majority of his students.
Perhaps the kids whom you say aren’t coming out for football at Alhambra are the ones who don’t want to be held accountable to any sort of expectations or standards.
You don’t know what you’re talking about, so just stop right there.

Kids aren’t coming out to play for Bergstrom because he is the high school coaching equivalent of Clay Helton. He’s a jolly good fellow to his fellow oldsters, but that doesn’t cut it with the youngsters.

Zamora doesn’t need their best effort to beat La Serna. A half effort will do it. Besides he knows all the guys from LS’s team, they all live next to Cal Hi. It’s like playing our B team. The soft ones left for the hills.

Just curious. If Alhambra is down to 20 fit players then I’am sure yhe Moors are having to suit up sophmores and freshmen. Do you even have any lower level teams and if you do do the Varsity players probably have suit up for the Thursday afternoon games right? What are the numbers for the freshmen team and who coaches them?

Biggest concern is why aren’t kids coming out to play football at Alhambra back when I went to school there were no shortage of guys wanting to play. Do the kids not like the coach and choose to play another sport or have the demographics changed in the area as I haven’t lived in the Alhambra since 2009
