Four and a half way at Bonita

The Schurr line should be fine

By Aaron Castro

Bonita, Colony, Covina, Schurr and Montclair all threw at Bonita High School on Thursday.

Three quarterbacks looking to make noise this season are: Garrett Pendleton, Bonita; Billy Livingston, Covina; and Aaron Cantu, Schurr.

Montclair looked mostly the way it has the past decade: undersized and under strength. Montclair had maybe 25 guys out, a few good athletes but that’s about it. It could be a long year for the Cavaliers in the Mt Baldy League.

Colony had plenty of athletes out there and looked like it should be on top of the Mt Baldy League along with Chaffey High School this season.

At Covina, no longer are there a bunch of sophomores and juniors. The Colts competed with Schurr although at times they appeared to be small. Billy Livingston looked sharp as he did the past weekend at the Air Assault. If his receivers step up Covina could compete in the Valle Vista.

Schurr

, coming off a 9-2-1 season, lost two key weapons in receivers Angel Sanchez and Carlos Arredondo. But the Spartans look like they’ve found some talent to replace them in Chris Chiaromonte and Matt Contreras. There are plenty of positive things to say about Aaron Cantu- great arm, solid reads, good mobility and strong mechanics. Don’t worry. Schurr can score. However can Schurr replace Nick Castillo, who toted the rock for over 1300 yards last season? Bradley Powell could be that guy.

Bonita came off a 3-8 season, but almost knocked off South Hills in the playoffs. What’s not to like? The Bearcats have bulked up, are faster and ready to play. Replacing DeRon Holmes shouldn’t be a problem with the speedy Giamani Johnson. Rising Sophomore Cameron Griffin also looked good. Cameron Salce is listed at 5’4″in cleats but he can catch and evade and also did a solid job on some of Schurr’s larger receivers.

How good can Garrett Pendleton become? He continues to impress this summer after putting on a great performance in the Air Assault tournament. Although there were a few drops today from his receivers, Pendleton had a good day. He had good footwork and a cannon for an arm. He also has nice touch and makes smart reads. He’s put in a lot of work in the off season and looks like he’ll have an excellent senior season.

Bonita names to keep an eye on:

Casey Horine

Daniel Harriman

Cameron Salce

Zach Brungard

Eric Mikity

This could be the deepest team that Eric Podley has had since he’s been at Bonita.
