(Covina)- Dale Ziola stepped down as the head football coach at Covina after three years Fred Robledo of SGVN Sports reported Monday.
The Colts went 8-4 overall last season and won the Sierra League title. They advanced to the second round of the CIF Division 10 playoffs before losing to Palmdale 58-13.
Covina went 2-3 in the Spring season and 4-6 in Ziola’s first campaign in 2019. The Colts were 14-13 overall during Ziola’s three-year tenure.
Covina will begin its search for a new coach immediately.
@ Anonymous: Yes, Coach Bergstrom is still at Alhambra. I saw him there just last week, and everyone is optimistic about next season. But, we need to make it through Covid first.
Is this what MVS has devolved to? Dissecting how much a high school coach earns and where he could make more or make less money? How could you possibly know what he is thinking? Plus is he not allowed to change his mind? What’s next? How a coach trims his beard or if you like his choice of shoes? I have even read some idiots critque a coaches weight and height. Don’t turn a football site into the Housewives of Beverly Hills!
From T. Peterson: MVS? We never reported what he earns. MVS Commenters maybe but not MVS.
He makes about 80k at Covina. If he was at Los Altos he would make about 115k, big difference. Teachers get paid once a month for 10 months, that would be $3,500 extra per month. I would resign at Covina also, do you blame him? Coach will pop up somewhere.
Covina School District’s pay is crappy compared to others in the area. They don’t honor all years of experience, so due to that, coaches would have to come in and take a pay-cut of what they’re getting somewhere else. Bet you that had to do a lot with Ziola’s decision. Now you know why Covina’s young QB left.
@ron is coach Eric still at Alhambra?
South Hills is same district as CHS, so that ain’t happening.
Some of these guys are trying to raise families and live similar lives to a lot of the keyboard puncher know it alls on here, and if the job doesn’t allow for it, then changes have to be made.
Ziola’s been teaching a long time, Covina Valley doesn’t honor all years, this marriage was doomed from the start. He should’ve done his homework better before taking the job in the first place
South Hills, here he comes!
C Loc is off base here. Ziola can coach and then some!
But it does beg the question, do coaches leave because the cupboard looks bare or does the cupboard become bare because the Coach steps down?
I think of West Covina and La Mirada. Both teams coaches stepped down right around the time their programs seemed to be declining. Once they came back, their programs thrived again. Did they come back and right the ship or was the talent pool a bit greater when they came back?
So many supposedly good high school coaches quit after a great player graduates or transfers out. Only a handful of SGV coaches build from within year after year.
@ Tim: That guy must be “loc.” (Note: The “o” has a long sound, for those of you who aren’t into urban slang.)
This Dude Can’t Coach..
He Tapped Out Of LA
When He Knew He Didn’t Have Players..Stay And Coach Up What You Have
Wait He Don’t Know About
That…14-13..Even When
He had Talent At Covina..
Still Couldn’t Win…C Ya!!!
From T. Peterson: He took Los Altos to two CIF Finals games and Covina to the 2nd round. He can coach. What are you talking about?
