  1. On Saturday in the AFC Wild Card Playoffs the Cincinnati Benglas beat the Las Vegas Raiders 26-19 and the Buffalo Bills routed the New England Patriots 47-17. 
  2. On Sunday in the NFC Wild Card Playoffs the Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat the Philadelphia Eagles 31-15 and the San Francisco 49ers beat the Dallas Cowboys 23-17. 
  3. The Kansas City Chiefs beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 42-21 in the AFC Wild Card Playoffs on Sunday Night Football. 
  4. Former Kentucky head basketball coach Joe B. Hall, who led Kentucky to an NCAA Championship in 1978, passed away at the age of 93.

  10. Left-Hander Jon Lester, a three-time World Series champion and 200-game winner, announced his retirement after 16 seasons. Lester won two World Series titles with the Boston Red Sox in 2007 and 2013, and a third with the Chicago Cubs in 2016.
