(Mission Viejo) – Schurr took third place Saturday at the Mission Viejo passing tournament. The Spartans finished 4- 1 knocking off Long Beach Wilson, Capistrano Valley, Corona Santiago and Palos Verdes. Their only loss was to host Mission Viejo.

Schurr fell down early 13-0 to LB Wilson before rallying late to win 20-19. Against Mission Viejo the Spartans hung tough for a half trailing only 19-13. But Mission Viejo pulled away in the second half to win big.

After a win over Capistrano Valley, Schurr defeated Corona Santiago. The Spartans again had to rally from a halftime deficit to pull out a 20-19 victory. In the final game the Spartans took care of Palos Verdes scoring three times while allowing PV just one.

Mission Viejo won the tournament with a perfect 5-0 record while Upland took second, also at 4-1. Upland’s close contest with Mission Viejo earned them a second place finish.

“This is the only time I’m happy to be holding a third place trophy,” said Schurr Coach Ben Negrete.

Quarterback Aaron Cantu threw the ball well for Schurr and he had couple of favorite targets in receivers Matt Contreras and Chris Chiaromonte. Tight end Trevor Kuresa, a former basketball player, found his niche at tight end making several tough catches in traffic.

Abe Gonzalez (LB, RB) and Alex Castro were also solid. Both made big catches for touchdowns. Running back Bradley Powell is gaining confidence every day. He made a couple of big catches out of the backfield to keep the chains moving.

Other players who also made an impact were juniors Eric Magos (RB) and Chris Jordan (WR).

Defensively, George Lugo stood out with an interception at safety.

Negrete will be live in the Mid Valley Sports Show Tuesday July 13.
