The Peterson Principle 7/13/10

Whittier Christian QB Stephen Anderson

It’s kind of like hitting the football jackpot. I felt like I just won the lottery on Saturday.  When you think about putting together a football preview the first thing that crosses your mind is making the time, the phone calls and the drives to contact all of the coaches.

Especially when you’re looking at the coverage area and realizing there are 60 teams. So when I walked out to the SGV Shootout at Gladstone High Saturday morning and saw 17 coaches of 17 teams that are in our zone, (Buena Park being the lone exception), yeah it felt good.

Talk about killing two birds with one stone. This was like killing 17 birds with one stone. And that’s not even mentioning the slew of assistants that were on hand as well.

The first team I had a chance to see was Whittier Christian who was at the far south end of the field. I didn’t get any gear from DC Pete Karavedes but I did get this comment.

“Oh sure now you get here,” Karavedes said. Then he proceeded to tell me the Heralds had already handily beaten their first opponent. It wasn’t even 10:00 yet.

I stayed for a few minutes and watched quarterback Stephen Anderson do his thing for Whittier Christian. I was impressed with the linebacking corp of Tim Sanchez, Rudy Robles and George Flynn. These three, all returning, remind some of the Northview linebackers of 2008. Andrew Rodriguez, Lionel Acosta and Christian Vargas led the Vikings to the second round of the playoffs where they fell to eventual CIF Champion Paraclete.

Wilson QB Brandon Schreiman

I ran into Covina Coach Daryl Thomas who was in between games. People are wondering if the Colts are going to get back on track this year but they’re forgetting that Covina has made the playoffs the last two years.

Thomas didn’t have any grand illusion about winning the tournament. The Colts were without junior quarterback Billy Livingston but for good reason. Livingston was at the Peyton Manning quarterback camp working under the tutelage of former NFL QB Tommy Maddox.

Nice early season match up for Covina in week zero. The Colts will hit the road for a quick bus ride to West Covina. You have to wonder why these two don’t play every year.

Azusa Coach Joe Scherf is excited about the 2010 version of his team and after seeing the Aztecs win the SGV Shootout you can see why. When I mentioned Azusa’s 21-4 record in his first two years, Scherf smiled and said that this is actually his best team yet.

With seven of the Aztecs ten games in the Montview and a non league schedule consisting of Bell Gardens, Ontario Christian and Gabrielino, a 10-0 season isn’t out of the question. The BG game in the opener will give us a good idea of where both teams are at.

I didn’t get a chance to talk to former Temple City Coach Anthony White who is now the HC at Buena Park. Word around Gladstone was that Buena Park has plenty of athletes. The problem for the Coyotes is that they play in the Freeway League that features La Habra, Fullerton, Troy and Sonora.

Arroyo Coach Jim Singiser after the first pools were completed at Noon. “If we don’t start playing better we’ll be at Lamp Post by 1 pm.”

The Knights did get knocked out early in the afternoon but the staff still didn’t get to Lamp Post until about 6 pm.

I had to convince Mrs. Worthy that even though I knew her son Jeff, (Whittier Christian DL), that I wasn’t a recruiter or with scouts.com. When I told her I was with Mid Valley Sports she breathed a sigh of relief.

“That recruiting process really gets to be bothersome,” she said. She did advise me that Jeff is set on Boise State and won’t be changing his mind.

I liked what I saw from Wilson Quarterback Brandon Schreiman. Only a junior, he looked poised and made good decisions.

I got enough information to last me a couple of weeks anyway. Some coaches think passing leagues are irrelevant. Some think they are very relevant. As for me I love them- the bigger the better. They make my job that much easier.

That’s my principle.
