Cal Gives Covina the Third Degree

(Covina) – California erased a four-point halftime deficit with a big third quarter and went on to beat Covina 57-53 Friday night on the Colts home floor.

Cal trailed Covina 29-25 at the half but outscored the Colts 20-9 in the third quarter as Darius Cabrera and Luke Sanchez each hit a three pointer and scored five points each in the quarter. The Condors hit three shots from beyond the arc in the third as Josh Linares also knocked one down.

Meanwhile Covina, who started out hot, went cold in the third quarter hitting just 2 of 12 shots. Four of their points came on free throws.

The Condors opened up an 11-point lead in the fourth quarter before the Colts made a late run to get even at 51. But Cal went on a 6-2 run to close it out.

Covina got off to a 17-13 first quarter advantage as Elvin Caballero scored six points and Devin Cevallos and Heworth Abraham each had four.

Cevallos carried the Colts in the second quarter with eight points in and around the paint but Cal kept pace and played the Colts even in the second at 12-12. Covina took the four-point lead into the break.

Cal then came out on fire in the third to take a 45-38 lead into the fourth and was able to hang on for the victory.

Cevallos led Covina with 22 points and Caballero was also in double figures with 10. Abraham had nine and Brendan Gill added eight points.

For Cal Sanchez took scoring honors with 18 points including four threes, Victor Mendez and Linares each had eight and Andrew Meza had six points down low. The Condors had eight players in the scoring column.

Cal improved to 9-7 on the season with the win while the Colts fell to 9-4.
