Fanview Lite: August 18, 2010

Former Arroyo quarterback Mark Colella still owns a piece of Temple City's North Field.

T-Minus-22 Days until “The Mid Valley Classic”

Good Afternoon!

Smudge Pot #3: November 16, 1974 at Mt. Sac (1:P.M.)

San Dimas scores on its first two possessions to upset previously undefeated Bonita, 14-0, and keep the Smudge Pot for a third consecutive year.

The Saints Fred Carter recovered a fumble at the Bearcat 23 on the opening drive. Moments later Carter ran 18-yards for the score.

Following a three and out by Bonita, San Dimas found themselves first and ten at Bearcat 44. On fourth and six SD HC Bob Baiz decided not to punt and it pays off. Quarterback Kevin Pokrajac goes 31-yards to John Stegmeier to set up first and goal at the nine. Three plays later Richard Burke bowled in behind the lead blocking of Don Edwards, Ron Reinford, and Jack Clark.

After Burke’s touchdown, the Saints wouldn’t advance offensively beyond their own 35 for the rest of the game. Bonita, which had already wrapped up the Hacienda League title the week before, lost its next best opportunities in the first half when it turned the ball over on downs twice deep inside SD territory.

In the second half Harold Drake was stopped by the Saints Terry Gillette on a fourth down at the three-yard line to prevent another Bearcat score.

“We’ve always played good defense,” said San Dimas HC Bob Baiz. “And today we got some scoring.”

Locked In: Opening night of “Rush Week”—Monday, August 23… Arroyo’s Jim Singiser and Rosemead’s Matt Koffler in the first hour. Whittier Christian HC Sergio Gradilla and DC Pete Karavedas in the second hour…

I’d say after getting a gash in the head requiring 12 stitches its a good call by New York Giants HC Tom Coughlin to sit Eli Manning this week.

After seeing St. Louis Rams highlights this week and the way they protected Sam Bradford, I was starting to think they had reacquired Alex Barron.

So after our recent mishap with Sierra Vista, I told Big George Hernandez to go out to SV and get the scoop on the Dons.

“Wait a second,” he says. “You guys BLANK UP and now you want to send me out there?”

He was tough to convince then I told him we would help him start his own network for sports entertainment called: Ese-PN.

What does ten years mean? In 2010 Norwalk is a powerhouse in the Southeast Division. They return Elijhaa Penny, Billy Moore, and more beef along the front line than the meat counter at Albertsons…(I know that’s old)…Bassett on the other hand is working with its third head coach in less than a year and numbers at one point this spring were under 15.

Put these teams together now, and its sayonara before the opening kick-off…But when they got together on opening night in 2000…It was Bassett that came away with a 30-20 victory…

SAY WHAT?!!!

I said; Bassett.

And on the same night Glendora and Baldwin Park played to a 6-6 draw.

Former Arroyo quarterback Mark Colella, who now fights MMA and was a guest on the show last night, shared with us stories from the 2002 season.

“I wanted to be a receiver,” Colella said. “But Coach (D.J.) MacKinnon came to me and said that he needed me to play quarterback.”

Colella would become the Knights fourth starting quarterback in four years and lead the team to its first Mission Valley League title since 1999.

One of his better memories was getting the season opener against Temple City at North Field. Following the Rams victory at Bergstrom in 2001, according to TC center Paul Uhl (also in studio last night), the winners began tearing out pieces of the grass.

Arroyo and Colella returned the favor in 2002. “Oh yeah, I loved it,” said Colella. “In fact I still have my piece of turf in my closet at home.”

I’m curious…Who’s the new Dodger closer? Kyra Sedgwick?

Last Note Mid Valley Classic 2002: A clerical error in the Arroyo front office, caused CIF to forfeit the Knights 16-14 victory to Temple City.

Last Add Paul Uhl: Seeing Lawrence Jackson (USC) was traded by the Seahawks to the Lions this week for an undisclosed pick reminded me of a November night back in 2001 when Jackson spent so much time the Temple City backfield I thought he was going to take then Temple City quarterback Matt Malczynski to the prom.

You know TC led 10-9 at halftime of that second round game before falling 45-21.

Last Add Big George: He was trying to push View as going 4-1 in its non-league schedule…I talked him down to at least 3-2…They’re not going to beat Hoover.

“Football Rush Week” is coming…August 23-27.—Including: Jim Singiser, Matt Koffler, Sergio Gradilla, Chris Long, Craig Snyder, Mike Maggiore, Jim Arellanes, Brian Zavala, Darryl Thomas, Jim Arnold, Mike McFarland…and more…

Stay thirsty my friends…
