Cougars Surprise Point Loma to Win PacWest Tournament

(San Diego) – Azusa Pacific beat Point Loma 78-66 Saturday to win the PacWest Tournament Saturday at Golden Gym in San Diego.

The victory culminated a stunning three game Tournament run for the Cougars who beat Hawaii Pacific and Academy of Art in the first two games. Azusa Pacific had a record of 11-16 overall coming into the tournament and had to win its final two regular season games just to qualify.

Then they beat Hawaii Pacific 56-55 on Thursday and knocked off Academy of Art 79-72 Friday before the championship win over Point Loma Saturday.

Ethan Speaker led the Cougars with 21 points in the win over the Sea Lions and Bryce Sloan had 13. Ken West and Caleb Taylor were also in double figures with 11 and 10 respectively.

With the PacWest Tournament Championship victory APU now advances to the NCAA Division 2 Tournament which begins Friday. The Cougars will play Cal State LA Friday night at 5:00 p.m. at Cal State LA in the first round.
