South Knocks Out Workman

(South El Monte) – South El Monte broke open a tie game with three runs in the fifth inning and five in the sixth and went on to beat Workman 9-2 Saturday on the Eagles home field.

With the game tied at one in the bottom of the fifth Andrew Medina and Emiliano Gonzalez walked. After Gonzalez stole third Gabriel Rincon singled to drive him in. Matthew Medina followed with a double to left to plate two more and the Eagles were up 4-1.

They added five more in the sixth. The Eagles batted around as Justin Sanchez walked twice in the inning, once to drive in a run and also scored a run. Andrew Medina had a run-scoring single and also scored and Gonzalez walked and eventually scored on a throwing error. Rincon also walked and scored and Matthew Medina drove in his third run of the game with a base hit to center and moved around to score. By the time the dust had settled South was cruising 9-1.

Workman actually got on the board first with a run in the top of the third. Damien Garcia beat out an infield hit and after a walk to Adrian Flores and single by Isaiah Vital, Garcia scored on a fielder’s choice on a ball hit by Jose Cardenas.

The Eagles tied it in the bottom of the third when Andrew Medina doubled and scored on a triple by Gonzalez. Gonzalez went two for two with two walks and two runs scored on the day.

The Lobos added one in the seventh as Garcia waked and scored on a double by Vital.

Xavier Cordova started for the Eagles and went five innings. He struck out eight and walked three. He worked his way out of a couple big jams in the first and third innings allowing just one run. Gonzalez came on to work the last two innings.

For Workman Cardenas started and allowed four runs before being relieved with one out in the fifth by Frank Godoy. Isaiah Tavarez came on in the sixth to finish up.

The Eagles stole six bases on the day including three by Andrew Medina.

“That’s exactly what we’re trying to do. We like to put pressure on the defense. We may get thrown out once in a while but we want to force them to make a play,” said South El Monte coach Michael Gonzalez.

South El Monte improved to 6-4 on the season with the victory while Workman fell to 2-4.
