Yeah, Duarte is out

Falcons working hard to forget 2009

It was late on a Thursday afternoon and I needed to stay local. Fighting the 605 or the 60 this time of day wouldn’t be worth it. I had to check out somebody here in our own backyard. Who hadn’t I seen in awhile? Oh, that’s right…Duarte.

Yeah the Falcons are out. I wouldn’t say in full force nor would I say they’re ready to take on the world. They’re more than a player or two away. But the point is they were out…sweating…hitting…fighting…knocking heads.

“It’s a heck of a lot better than last year,” said second year Head Coach Lavelle “Tip” Sanders. “We have about 30 out right now and maybe 13 or 14 of them are freshman. But that’s not too bad.”

Wardell Crutchfield was let go before the 2009 season and several players followed him out the door. Sanders came aboard but was left with a decimated roster and in early May he had only five players in camp. The Falcons finished 0-10 but considering the state of the program it was an accomplishment that they were able to field a team.

This year the view is improving. Sanders, who has worked his magic at Blair and Marshall previously, enters this year with at least a complete roster.

Nearly all of his players will go both ways; among them Michael Nunez, Joey Oseguera, and Aaron Castillo. The quarterback position is up for grabs with Victor Roman and Ronnie Lynall competing.

Sanders gets a shot at his former team when he faces Blair in the opener on September 10. The non league schedule also consists of Garey and Little Rock before the Falcons begin Montview League play at home against Sierra Vista on October 1.

How many games will the Falcons win? At this point it’s really hard to say but one thing is for certain. With Sanders at the helm, Duarte will always be battling.

“This is a fight!” Sanders screamed at a lineman during a drill. “Do

you understand that? You need to whip his butt!”
