Game Night: Week 6

Noah Mikhail and Bonita take on Glendora in the Sierra League opener.

All kickoffs are at 7:00 p.m. unless otherwise indicated:

Thursday October 3

West Covina (2-3) at San Dimas (4-1)

The Saints looked good Friday night in a rout of Monrovia…real good. West Covina won’t be as susceptible to the run but the Bulldogs will still have trouble limiting the San Dimas attack. West Covina has a solid ground game as well but in end the San Dimas runs to another victory.

San Dimas 24 West Covina 17

Friday October 4

El Rancho (4-2) at La Serna (3-3) (California)

If El Rancho can limit the turnovers and establish the run or if the defense can force a couple of turnovers El Rancho may have a shot to…c’mon who am I kidding? La Serna rolls. It will be over by halftime.

La Serna 42 El Rancho 7

Los Altos (3-2) at Covina (4-1) (Covina District Field)

Covina has an explosive offense. The Colts racked up 42 points last week in a win over Santa Fe. Los Alto took care of Cal but may not have enough to overtake Covina. Both teams want a win to kick off the Hacienda League. Covina gets it done.

Covina 35 Los Altos 14

Arroyo (2-3) at Rosemead (1-4)

This is historically a great rivalry game. These two have been battling it out in the Mission Valley League for the better part of 50 years. This year is a little different. Rosemead has struggled and Arroyo has lost three of its first five. Rosemead may have a moment or two but Arroyo will come away with the win. The Knights have a little too much.

Arroyo 31 Rosemead 7

Muir (3-2) at Arcadia (1-4) (Thursday October 3)

A few weeks ago this looked like a good game. But after what Muir did to Crescenta Valley last Friday night it doesn’t look good for the Apaches. While Arcadia was losing to Burbank the Mustangs were destroying CV 53-0. No, that’s not a typo. Muir gets going early and never looks back. The Stangs won’t lose a Pacific League game.

Muir 45 Arcadia 13

La Canada (5-0) at Temple City (5-0) (San Marino)

Maybe the game of the week. Both teams are coming in undefeated and both have raised some eyebrows. La Canada has been lighting up the scoreboard with a balanced attack. Temple City can score as well but has been doing without receiver Judah Douglas who injured an ankle earlier in the year. The Rams are on their way but aren’t quite there just yet. La Canada emerges with the victory.

La Canada 34 Temple City 21

San Marino (3-2) at Monrovia (4-1) (Thursday October 3)

Monrovia took it on the chin last week The Wildcats couldn’t contain the San Dimas running attack in a 42-14 loss. San Marino routed Centennial Compton. If the Titans can run the ball again Monrovia may be in trouble. A solid defensive effort and a strong ground game could equal victory for San Marino. The Cats will strike first but San Marino rallies late for the win.

San Marino 24 Monrovia 21

Bonita (5-0) at Glendora (3-2) (Citrus College)

Bonita is on a different level right now. The Bearcats have outscored their last two opponents 94-7. Glendora bounced back from a rough start to win its last two games. Bonita starts Sierra League play with a win.

Bonita 35 Glendora 17

@FB Fan, you don’t get it. If someone doesn’t go with the plan or believe in the system he will not be part if that program, period. Stubborn you say? You don’t have a clue. You know nothing of what goes on in a football program. It’s easy to pass judgment from the stands. Medrano brings out the best from his players. El Rancho is not as talented as other teams because he plays with the hand he’s dealt. That is the true meaning of being a coach. Hats off to coach Medrano and his staff.

Based on AD/HC?’s interview, he makes sound like he has the talent to take on J Serra. Only scoring 67 AND giving up 27 to a San Marino 28 man team…sure does prove little.

    @Sports Man,

You must not have paid attention to how the landscape or HS football has changed in the last 3 years. Divisions are now decided at the end only the season based on computer rankings and high have a formula. This is where tanking comes into play now so a team can be in a lower Division.

Medrano has evolved. The current QB would not last in his old philosophy. He’s getting the most out of talented players when before he
only got the most out of his most loyal players- which was a lot….
From someone who knows him a little, the best part about ER coach Medrano is also the worst part about him. He’s a good enough coach to take someone or a group of someone’s that nobody gives a chance and bring out their best potential. He’s able to do that in a way that no one else can.
The worst part about him is that he’s too stubborn to realize that not everyone is going to follow that path. He’ll miss some really good teams that don’t have the same philosophy.

Calpreps says La Serna wins Friday 42-3; Tim says 42-7. Both predictions fail to account for La Serna’s liberal use of subs, starting even in the second quarter of these league abominations. The true score is going to be 42-21, which makes dumb people think the Lancer coaches are really nice, not wanting to rub things in. In truth, LS is keeping its league games close to get plopped into an easier playoff division, making another CIF title that much easier to attain. I strongly suggest that Calpreps modify its software to account for this type of malfeasance…call it the La Serna algorithm.

the people that are in the know are correct on the whole bonilla situation. it was never a fair contest and the longs were always going to win in the end. he’d be better off at el rancho where he’d shine and probably get them deep into the post season. its unfortunate that the head coach is letting his personal relationship get in the way of making a fair decision instead of creating a fake qb competition

ls would’ve won cif regardless of who was at qb btw but the following wins in the state playoffs definitely wouldn’t have happened without cj at the helm. and to be fair to owen long he had the catch of the year that ultimately allowed la serna to win that state game.

best of luck to all. hs sports politics is always crap but unavoidable

    I posted this in August…..
Not sure if Bonilla was around when they had another QB battle with a “Long” and the other QB CJ Seron. CJ was the obvious better QB but the Long’s personal realtionship with the Coach would win. Just as it will now. Too bad noone warned Bonilla about a battle he’s not going to win. But if I am correct QB Long did break a school record for LS- throwing the most interceptions. Don’t believe the “tough” decision for Andy George.. he knows exactly what he’s going to do and noone will convince him otherwise.

Today- here we are. I was at the last game and Bonilla outplayed Long. But the favoritism won. It will never end ; last night on spaces the State game was mentioned and CJ and Tufada’s dominant plays also during CIF. But surprise- Long got MVP of the state game. I guess his 19 tackles earned him MVP however those tackles were only possible because Grant had to resort to the running game after CJ knocked out their QB. Without CJ – not Long- they wouldn’t have even won CIF. That’s an MVP. That said, O Long is an incredible player, and handed alot of opportunities at LS that helped him out.

It is what it is- the family ties with George will always beat out the fair decision.

You are an old has been. Medrano has never complained about La Serna’s reign. He has never recruited. His best team was probably the one that featured a 5′ 3″ QB and kids down the street. Much like today’s team. You are the one doing all the bellyaching. You got a problem with the way El Rancho parents raise their boys or the way coach goes about his business tell them to their face not on some anonymous post. The Ranch is not Monrovia or Arroyo. BTW every program has major problems. The Rancho Margarita D1 school had their HC removed today and Mater Dei coaches were sued for millions a couple of years ago so chill old man the boys are fine.

Did you just dream that up about ER all of a sudden being able to compete with LS mr OC? Stop creating false narratives no one called ER a contender in the DRL, maybe you want to find a way to motivate your team into thinking they are underdogs but that is a load of crap. Why the heck would the El Rancho coach spear head changing leagues. Think about it for a second, almost every year that he’s been coaching at El Rancho it’s been LS and ER as 1 and 2, why would he want to leave a league where all the schools are weak because everyone goes to LS, it’s almost a guaranteed playoff entry for ER. A lot of people would agree the league championships don’t matter much with the way the new playoff pairings work, makes absolutely zero sense. Talk to your other Whittier union head coaches about why this league change is happening and you’ll get your answer, don’t point fingers when you have no clue. As far as a qb transferring out of LS, let the kid do what he wants, he only has 4 years, 2 are in the trash, might as well make the most of the remaining 2, you are no one to tell this family what they should or shouldn’t do, you were part of the bs to begin with.

So I’m hearing of The Ranch being a formidable contender in the DLR and I sincerely hope they are but we typically hear this every year. If my sources are accurate, it is also the ER Coach who is spearheading this effort to move La Serna out of the DLR. And for what? To win a league title? Please! Quit whining and just get better. This is what is happening to our youth today. Not happy? Go somewhere else or kick someone out. You think those guys in the Moore League enjoy playing LB Poly every year in league? Find ways to keep your local athletes at your school. Put forth the effort to make your team better during the offseason. Shake hands with the parents & kids and make them believe your school is the best place for them.

Look at the situation that someone mentioned on here. There was a QB competition at La Serna and now that a starter has been named, the kid may transfer. Possibly heading to El Rancho where his brother was a very good running back a couple years ago.
So let’s ask the next question, Is it the parents? Or the kids? When does this become about teaching the kids life lessons as opposed to “I didn’t get my way and I’m leaving?”. It’s going on everywhere. Society has become a bunch of whining little babies…..a bunch of “leles” as we used to say back in the day. Parents today are not helping their kids in anyway with decisions like this.
Kids need to face adversity. They need to ask coach, “how else can I help the team?” Or even, “what can I do to get better?” Having athletes be loyal to a program is a dying breed but it’s what our society needs to return to. What happens if the kid has no success at his next stop? Does he flee again? Come on parents. Take a step back and look at what you’re teaching your child.
I get it happens everywhere. Happened at Warren. Happens at Schurr. Happens at Charter Oak. Happens at Bell Gardens. Happens at Monrovia. Amat. Damien. San Dimas. St Paul. Bosco. Every school. It’s becoming a bit much.
Quit living this pipe dream. Teach these young men to overcome adversity and make positive contributions to their team and their communities. Not everyone is born to be 6’5” 235 lbs. but everyone has the ability to be mentally and physically tough. It can be taught. They can be groomed in a positive manner.
    But so can the alternative.

Thanks Tim for giving me/us this platform.

Bonilla may come in as a student but not a football player. I’am sure La Serna will protest any athletic move as they play each other in two days. To many I’s to dot and T’s to cross. Somewhat surprising because Medrano does not seek transfers and ER already has a very good under rated QB. There are several big time transfers in the hopper. Northviews transfer might workout but Amats and Damien’s very iffy. But those type teams know how to do it and live and die by transfers.

Looking at MaxPreps stats, QB’s at La Serna had the similar stats. I thought Bonilla had a better handle of the offense but I’m a fan what do I know. I’m sure they went with Long since they(family) have a history there. You don’t want to upset that family lol Parents should’ve know he was never going to get a fair shot at winning the position. The question at end of season will be if Bonilla transfers. I say yes unless Long looks average during league games. He shouldn’t since Whiiter and Cal in the league.

I am not as enthusiastic for the prospects of TC in the TC LC match up. RE Low Profile- I definitely side with a margin approaching 40 LC victory. LC is on a roll and the TC girls flag football type schedule resulting in a 5-0 record will be unmasked for all to see. Any margin near the optimistic MV prediction of 10 points would be reason for TC residents to have a parade from campus to block Las Tunas Blvd for a block party.

Take 2- in another optimistic take MV has SMHS beating Monrovia? While I like the idea of ending the Monrovia monopoly on the RHL title, I don’t see that happening. But if the intrepid MV Peterson or others at MV are correct it might fit to past history of wild and wacky RHL finishes that have included many ties and coin flips, as well as impromptu games on the final day of the season where two of the tied teams traveled to a neutral field to have a CA tie breaker to decide a playoff invitation. Or maybe the announcement that a playoff spot would be forfeited by the winner of a final game to the loser, after admission of spying and video taping the practices of their opponent that was forfeited to after the game.

So MV has some history on their side to claim the unexpected.

@Low Profile, I agree, La Canada should beat TC by a lot based on the fact that TC had an extremely weak non-league schedule and are without their best player. La Canada seems to have rebounded this season and will be a force to deal with for all the other Rio Hondo League teams. However it wouldn’t surprise me if there are some upsets this Friday like the one Tim is predicting between San Marino and Monrovia.
