Rodriguez Resigns at Mt. View

By Tim Peterson

(El Monte) – Paul Rodriguez has stepped down as the head football coach at Mt. View. He was asked to resign after allowing a player to participate in a game who was not cleared from a previous injury according to multiple sources.

The Vikings are currently 1-6 overall and 0-2 in the Mission Valley League. Rodriquez took over before the 2021 season and went 2-7 his first year. The Vikings best year under Rodriguez was 2023 when they went 6-4 overall and 2-3 in the MVL. One of those wins was by forfeit over Rosemead.

Mt. View was 12-24 overall during Rodriguez’ three-plus years and 2-15 in the MVL.

The Vikings have three games remaining this year – this week at Gabrielino and then at home against Arroyo and El Monte.

Moist and plump is the village idiot. Don’t take him serious. Probably a bitter former coach with nothing better to do.

Just to amplify JS point . 3 of the wins came vs teams that were 0-10 ( Keppel,Workman,Gab) !
One win vs 1-9 Century . Their best win vs 5-5 Bassett who finished last in Miramonte League . They claim forfeit win over Rosemead ….a game in which they allowed 64 points . They gave up 64 to Rosemead ???!!!!
That’s why I had no idea what the reference to historic season was all about and couldn’t fathom the comment lol

    MVL observer,

To clarify, ended the season 2-3 and 4th in the MVL on paper, but 1-4 on the field.

The damn coach, that’s who!! Parent waiver doesn’t trump a Dr non-clearance, dummy! Kid’s injury gets worse on the field without a Dr clearance, that Stadium and school would be renamed to that family’s name!

This guy thinks a parent waiver is all that’s needed! Hahahahaha!!!

Big Senior class? History the year before?? History is beating Arroyo and SEM and El Monte. Going 3-2 with a weak pre-season and 2-3 in league and 1 of those league wins coming off a Rosemead forfeit doesn’t qualify as a a historic year at MV. Not sure what you’re talking about at all. DELETED

Too many factors in play here to understand how egregious the coach was or how sensitive the admin was in this situation.

Playing a medically uncleared kid range from all sorts of things.

    1. 3Maybe it was a kid who rolled his ankle at practice and the parents foolishly decided to take him to the ER that night. Doctor said he’s out 2 weeks, but kid felt great the next day and parents decided he could play?

    2. Maybe the kid was cleared by a doctor after a concussion, but the coach didn’t know enough about the return to play protocols?

    3. Or maybe the coach went full blown Bud Kilmer mode and made Billy Bob go out there when there was no medical or ethical reason to do so.

So many variables involved here and administrators will look for a scapegoat.

605 league is now significantly better than the MVL with the demise of Arroyo and Rosemead . The two bellwethers of MVL are on the skids and it’s a D14 league .
At least 605 has a decent Cerritos squad . Artesia and even Pioneer are on upswing lol

MV should bring in one of the greatest turn around coaches Rick Vice from Pullam University. He’s probably available if you can find him and he’ll bring his old line coach Bob Delger with him. He did wonders in Division 3.

    M&P,

You start off by saying that the HC did nothing wrong. Did he allow a not medically cleared to play kid on the playing field?

In that same paragraph, you say the Coach would have turned the program around within 2 years, yet, paragraph that follows, you state that Mt. View should just drop to 8-man football or not play the sport altogether because it is too far gone and beyond fixing…which is it? LOL!!!

Let me tell you, there’s a history with Mt. View football, and not a favorable one. No one is coming to Mt. and change things within 2 years. Shoot, history there won’t change in ten, as it has not in 25+ years!! The last time the Vikes had any measurable success was back in ’97, I believe. They had the best talent in the MVL that year, under Alonzo, yet didn’t even sniff 1st place. They should have joined that 605 league when it opened up.

rodriguez did nothing wrong. it is disgraceful, disgusting, and outright despicable that the administration did not back him up. he wouldve of turned things around at mt view within 2 years.

that being said, at this point mt. view (and whittier to be honest) need to just drop down to 8 man or not play football any more. they are too far gone and beyond fixing.

Agree with the gist of your post . I do think you can have CalPreps of -10 to maybe 5 or 10 and a good record ( depending on league) with the
    “neighborhood “ team

Good luck to all those grinding it out in week 8

Your take is about as accurate as it gets. Most new coaches today rely on a 7 on 7 playbook that only works when your athletes are better than theirs. They have no concept on how to run the ball or build a program from the ground up. And most admin don’t know anything about high school sports or what is needed for success, so they keep hiring these self-centered morons that call themselves “coaches.” But, then again, there’s a reason a lot of good coaches are no longer coaching. The time and effort needed for success is no longer appreciated, and in some cases no longer accepted by players, parents, and admin. Good luck Mountain View. You’re going to need it.

My guess is the best high school head coach in California has a team that is languishing with a -15 to-40 cal preps rating and is probably 3-4 or 2-5 at this point. Makes a run every few years but has no rings. Plays with boys from his attendance zone and the only new players that show up are his former players siblings.I’am guessing these coaches are hard to find because a hot shot AD fires them in search of the latest recruiting genius but those guys don’t hang around long. They are always looking for greener pastures Good luck in finding a new man Mt. View.

My Alma mater doing mt view things. This is an embarrassment. And that’s saying a lot.
Hope is dire. Even if a quality coach comes through he’ll win for a couple of seasons then bounce to a bigger job. It might be time to create a league for some of those bottom level teams .

Furthermore, beating Rosemead isn’t going to save the season , get you to playoffs or change the direction of program. Granted, it’s last chance for a glimpse of hope or respectability. But there’s no one on roster going to make that kind of difference on the field .
Too bad , usually these things are the culmination of many untoward events in a disappointing season. Any coach losing their job is painful in some way , and hope things can turn around for both team and coach in future.

    Don’t Blame Coach,

Absolutely you blame the coach! Yes, parents may say that they are OK with their “making it to the pros” injured player playing in a game without being medically cleared. Shoot, may have even given their blessing by handing the coach a signed letter stating such. But the coach has the responsibility to save injured kids from not only themselves, but from parents that are living through their kids!

MVS had the inside scoop early in the weekend, and info correct.
They showed some promise at beginning of 23 season . Downhill since then
