(Burbank) – Burroughs has named Jose Calzadilla as its new head football coach the school announced Monday.
Calzadilla, a Burroughs alum, coached at Burroughs from 2001-2016 as the offensive coordinator for the junior varsity and has also been a position coach at the varsity level.
Calzadilla replaces LaRon Johnson who stepped down after one year. The Bears finished 6-4 last season and missed the playoffs.
Here is a statement released by Burroughs.

Some people just ‘get off’ making such negative comments which very well could ease the person’s weak ego. In a very basic psychology 101 or 102 ‘the people who consistently insult, and criticize , other people are the ones with the real problems’! NO NO please don’t claim that I think I know it all, or am smarter than anyone else! OKAY? But I do have some basic knowledge on this very focus! Research yourselves if you want to. People who criticize consistently (as some do on this site) have an “unconscious ‘type of reason to do this. Psychology dictates ‘people who needing to consistently insult/criticize’ others are protecting their ego using this behavior as a ‘defense mechanism! It is done mainly unconscious
Didn’t Pasadena just win a CIF title. And Muir did 2 years ago. Once again poop monsters mouth is full of crap…
@Low Profile wrong again. those leagues all have teams that have section championships in recent memory and they have multiple teams that have won playoff games way more recently than burroughs has even come close to winning one. like i said, bumslayers. worst league in so cal.
Although coaching staffs these days consist of 8-11 coaches, Most football programs are held together by a couple of assistants who work in the dark to make the head coach look good. It’s rare that longtime assistants who have been loyal to 1 place get the chance to drive the ship, or if they even want to be the man in charge. I wish Coach Calzadilla all the best.
It’s not the worst league around . It’s a mid league and much better than MVL, Rio Hondo Almont, and the real
Bottom feeders of SGV , like Montview Miramonte and 605 .
The league has taken a turn downward the last couple years .
The new hire is way better than last guy so give him a chance . Too many great assistants never get a chance
@Coach trust me bro I live in way too expensive of a zip code to be seen anywhere in the vicinity of a place like Burroughs. I mean no disrespect whatsoever but the facts are the facts. just calling it like it see it. Again, the games will be played and when we’re on the comments section 10 months from now when Burroughs is looking for a new coach we can revisit the conversation.
Sounds like either you applied and are bitter, or maybe are a former coach, or you feel some sort of injustice towards this program. Time to be an adult and accept what’s happened and not trash someone or something you have no knowledge, don’t personally know, or should even care about. Therefore, I bid you farewell.
@Coach bumslaying the worst league in the southern section is no accomplishment. how many championships have they won in those 19 years you claim? when was the last time they even won a single playoff game?
and yes getting gifted a job by the old coach there is the literal text books definition of nepotism. thank you for literally proving my point. i personally know about multiple coaches with literal state title rings that applied for this job. time will tell who ends up with egg on their face. i guarantee it won’t be me.
In the know must be a soy boy supporter of the trans movement in girls sports! TDS on the blog, wow!
Let’s see. Burroughs has won a third of the pacific league championships since moving into the league 19 years ago. All while never recruiting.
And are you an insider and know who all applied and what their coaching history is? If they were a fit for that program? No. Until you’ve been part of that program, you can’t comment on it.
Also, if you actually researched, one of the areas best and well liked coaches, also a former Burroughs HC, completely backed the hire and stated that this hire was one of the best coaches he ever had ever worked with. But, nepotism… from a someone who calls themself the poop monster.
When you politicize you fall to the level of the contributors you criticize.
@Coach and what has Burroughs won in those 25 years? Nobody is expecting nick saban, but there are qualified and great high school coaches looking for an opportunity. Stop the nepotism and find one of them.
Maybe next year Burroughs will figure it out.
Thanks. Just sad that people comment about things they don’t know and people they don’t know. Btw, he controlled the run game for Burroughs last year. They had nearly 2,000 yards rushing.
These people act like they expect a school to hire a Nick Saban level of head coach to come in and coach for a grand total of a couple thousand dollar stipend, if they’re lucky.
@Coach: Consider yourself lucky you didn’t get the “Moist and Plump” commenter. Sadly this site has devolved into nothing but Trump like liars. Just flapping their maws to get noticed.
You know how to read right? He’s been an assistant there for 25 years. What do you actually know about him to make this comment? For all you know he actually works on campus and is respected by current and former staff and players. Outsiders making comments about something they know jack about.
Love this big splash hire!
lol these clowns hired a jv coach to run a grown man program. see you next year when your hiring the next one.
