(Pasadena)- Muir held San Gabriel to just 12 points in five red zone visits and cruised to a 46-12 win Friday night.

“We got to definitely clean up our red zone offense,” emphasized San Gabriel’s Jude Oliva, who started his first year as head coach with a loss.

Traveion Yates, who accounted for two sacks and a forced fumble, anchored the Mustang defense and rattled SG sophomore Eric Alvarez in the second half.

“He had a lot of good stuff happening for him tonight,” said Muir head coach Ken Howard of Yates. “He really stepped up in the second half.”

A sluggish start in zero week wasn’t a surprise for either team as the Mustangs ended the first drive of the game with a punt.

San Gabriel took advantage of the early defensive stop by marching down the field behind a confident Alvarez. He was perfect on the drive completing six passes to setup kicker Gilmar Tenes for a 22-yard field goal.

Down three, Muir struck quickly with a 64-yard run by Tairen Owens. After another lengthy drive by SG ended in a missed field goal, Muir returned to its sluggish beginnings and gave up a safety that closed the gap 6-5.

Alvarez, with 10:16 in the second quarter, demonstrated confidence and precision driving his team down to the ‘Stang 9-yard line where he saw back up running back Matthew Tafoya lose the ball and an opportunity to take the lead before half.

San Gabriel again could not get anything started and was forced to punt to start the third.

The ‘Stangs found themselves on the SG eight yard-line and took full advantage of the short field and bulldozed their way in the end zone with full back Dennis Vaughn. They now lead 12-5 after a missed two point conversion.

Much like Muir did in the first half, the Matadors answered right back with a 78-yard run by Arthur Brown who scored two plays later to tie the game at 12.

From there the walls began to cave in for the Matas as they could not generate enough positive plays to overcome the talented ‘Stang defense that attacked the SG sophomore quarterback. Alvarez would end the game by throwing three interceptions in consecutive drives.

Muir kept piling on the points with two rushing touchdowns by quarterback Jeffrey Davis and another two from Owens and Vaughn. They ended the onslaught with a 98-yard touchdown pitch catch from Davis to Karl Holmes who had an otherwise quiet night.
