(Montebello) -Austin Montoya, who has been an assistant at Schurr for several years, has been named the head football coach for the Spartans it was confirmed Friday.
Montoya takes over for David Ramos who resigned after 10 years at the helm.
Montoya had two stints at Schurr as an assistant. He assisted on the coaching staff from 2016-’17 and again from 2021-’24, both times under Ramos.
He has coached defensive backs, linebackers and has served as the Special Teams Coordinator.
“I’m excited, I’m humbled, I’m honored, I’m emotional, and every other feeling you can imagine. I’m 32 years old and I understand many don’t get this opportunity this young,” Montoya said. “I’ve worked my butt off for this opportunity so I’m excited but I know I have a lot of work to do and some big shoes to fill. Schurr has a long history of success and I plan on keeping our tough brand of football to maintain our storied history success.”
Wasn’t sure about this hire. Once I heard he wasn’t bringing back a few coaches and the coaches he was bringing in. You can tell by that he is looking to make the right moves to get them over that second round hump!
Interestingly enough they have been heavily focused on Whittier Redskin kids, can they manage to outdo la Serna for players? Hmm?
Rebels= SGHS
Time to go get those Rosemead rebels and east la bulldogs
To hear somebody express such gratitude and humility in the taking of what we all know to be an underpaid and often thankless job is refreshing. I’m honored to welcome him to the HC position and wish him all the best.
Congratulations Austin your hard work and dedication to the program has paid off. Let’s continue doing big things and bring back a CIF Title. Go Spartans!
