2—The Texas Rangers and Houston Astros are both 76-76 and tied for first in the American League West.

4—On this date in 1920 — The American Professional Football Association (the forerunner of the NFL) was founded in Canton, Ohio. Twelve teams each paid a $100 franchise fee. It was renamed the National Football League in 1922.

5—On this date in 2004 Schurr’s Jesse Ramirez rushed 27 times for 232 yards and one touchdown in the Spartans 20-13 victory at Downey. Marion Jennings leads the Vikings with 112 yards on 12-carries. Ramirez finishes the season with 2,664 rushing yards and 32 touchdowns.

6—North Carolina announced this morning that defensive coordinator Steve Belichick is resigning, effective Oct. 27 when his medical leave ends. Belichick been on medical leave since Aug. 6. The university said it concluded an independent investigation into the football program’s culture and climate. Officials found that “certain actions demonstrated a disregard for Carolina’s values and standards of conduct,” but described those actions as isolated rather than a systemic failure. The school now considers the matter resolved and said corrective steps are underway.

7—On this date in 1996 the Dodgers’ Hideo Nomo fires a no hitter in a 9-0 win over Colorado at Coors Field.

8—Cincinnati quarterback Joe Burrow has a sore back heading into the Bengals Week 2 match with the Houston Texans.

9—USC freshman wide receiver Trent Mosley, who has 13 receptions for 255 yards and four touchdowns in three games, will not play Saturday against Rutgers. Mosley suffered a knee injury late in the Trojans win over Louisiana last Saturday, but HC Lincoln Riley says the injury is not expected to be extremely long term.
