Halo Happenings: 2/23/2025

Long time starters Patrick Sandoval and Griffin Canning moved on during the off season, so what does the Angels starting rotation look like in 2025?

(Sandoval was, controversially, non-tendered and signed with the Red Sox. Canning was traded to Braves for Jorge Soler.)

Yusei Kikuchi (LHP), 33: 9-10/4.05
Signed by the Angels to a 3-year/$63 million deal. He went 9-10 last season with the Blue Jays and Astros. Broke in with Seattle in 2019. Won 11 games for Toronto in 2023.

Tyler Anderson (LHP), 34: 10-15/3.81
The most dependable starter in 2024 with 179 innings pitched—most of his career. After making the All-Star team he struggled in the second half.

Jose Foriano (RHP), 26: 6-7/3.42
Went from the bullpen to the starting rotation, threw 113 innings, and looked tired down the stretch. Figures to improve with off-season to prepare.

Jack Kochanowicz (RHP), 24: 2-6/3.99
Made 11 starts and finished rookie season in fine fashion.

Kyle Hendricks (RHP), 34: 4-12/5.92
Eleven year run with Cubs ended with a brutal 2024.
He threw 130 innings, and figures to stick around to help some of the younger pitchers.

Reid Detmers (LHP), 25: 4-9/6.70
Has talent to be a star, but since breaking in 2021 he’s failed to put it together. There are moments of brilliance, but his 6.70 ERA tells you the brilliance doesn’t last long. Must overcome inconsistency for a spot in the rotation.

Chase Silseth (RHP), 24: 0-1/6.75
After a solid 2023, he came into 2024 with a lot of promise but struggled early. Developed an elbow issue that required surgery in August. Will battle Detmers for 5th spot in the rotation.

(Note: On Sunday, 2/23/25, both Detmers and Silseth were hammered by Cleveland. Guardians 14, Angels 2.)

Sam Aldegheri (LHP), 23: 1-2/4.85
Born in Verona, Italy his time is not now. If it is now it will be because things are not going well in Anaheim.

Caden Dana (RHP), 21: 1-2/9.58
Got a cup of coffee last September and got bounced around. Listed as the Angels #1 prospect, like Aldegheri, his time is not now.

When will the Angels ever get enough pitching? As I recall, they had pretty good pitching in 2002, which was the first and only time they won the World Series. (That was also back when the Disney Company still owned the team.)
The lack of quality pitching has got to be the biggest reason for the Angels’ decades of struggle to be competitive in the AL West. Maybe owner Arte Moreno should spend more money on his club instead of making political contributions and messing around with the City of Anaheim.
