1. Former Chicago Cubs and Philadelphia Phillies manager Lee Elia passed away at the age of 87.

2. Jalen Williams signed a five-year extension with Oklahoma City that could be worth up to $287 million.

3. Oklahoma City also signed Chet Holmgren to a five-year extension that could reach $250 million.

4. Former Utah Jazz head coach and GM Frank Layden passed away at the age of 93.

5. The Dodgers fell 3-2 in 10 innings to the Milwaukee Brewers Wednesday which was their sixth straight loss. The Dodgers will face the Giants this weekend in San Francisco. 

6. Azusa Pacific has named BJ Porter as its new men’s basketball coach.    

7. The Chicago Cubs’ Pete Crow-Armstong became the fourth-fastest player in major league history to reach the 25-homer, 25-steal mark. Crow-Armstrong did it in his 92nd game.

8. Colorado head coach Deion Sanders is advocating for a salary cap in college football. 

9. The Dallas Mavericks beat the Lakers 87-85 Thursday night in the NBA Summer League. Dallas’ Cooper Flagg made his professional debut and scored 10 points on 5 for 21 shooting.

10. Chargers’ running back Najee Harris sustained an eye injury after a fireworks mishap on the Fourth of July but the injury is minor and he should be ready for the season.

    Regarding Neon Deion’s angst over rising college pay, I think the rules should be altered to allow
    guys to hang around to age 35-40, bypassing the pros altogether, taking a few remedial courses for appearances. Let the colleges compete with the pros for players, with the most financially shrewd getting the gravy.
