Aztecs Quarterback Tandem Lead Shutout of Lancers

By Tony Solorzano

(Bell Gardens) – Azusa Head Coach Joe Scherf introduced a new quarterback platoon scheme which resulted in four touchdown passes between quarterbacks Jake Martinez and Jose Nunez as the Aztecs (1-0) opened the 2010 football season with a 48-0 victory over Bell Gardens Friday night.

It should have been apparent after the first play of the game that it would be a long night for Josh Adame of the Lancers (0-1). After the opening kickoff resulted in a touchback, Edwin Garcia stormed through the line and forced Adame to fumble, which was picked up by Nunez, who ran it back for a score 13 seconds into the game. Garcia would play a factor in all of the fumbles throughout the night, including one that he picked up and ran back 40 yards for another touchdown for the in the third quarter.

It was almost too easy for the Aztecs to score in the first half, as Nunez connected three times in the first half for scores. His first score came with 4:04 left in the quarter as he hit Abe Ochoa for a 13-yard touchdown, increasing the lead to 14-0. Just over a minute later, Nunez helped convert a fumble recovery at the Lancer 26-yard line into a second score, again to Nunez from eight yards out. However, Nunez’ point after attempt failed, giving the Aztecs a 20-0 lead at the end of the quarter.

In the second, Steven Blount increased the lead with five minutes left in the half as he took a handoff from Martinez and rolled 40-yards for a touchdown. Nunez would throw his third score two minutes later as he found Jesus Arteaga for a nine-yard touchdown.

Garcia’s fumble recovery in the third put the Aztecs up 41-0 as the Lancers coughed up the ball three times throughout the quarter. Finally Martinez added a seventh score late in the fourth when he found Ed Sosa in the end zone for a 9-yard hit.

The Aztecs will host Ontario Christian while the Lancers will host the El Rancho Dons next Friday.
