(Baldwin Park) — South Hills was out of sync in the first half but that soon became a distant memory as the Huskies scored 29 consecutive points en route to a 38-17 win over Baldwin Park to open the season.
Junior Huskies’ rusher Jamel Hart hit paydirt from 33 yards out to open the scoring. He had 109 yards on 13 carries before succumbing to cramps shortly into the second half.
Jordan Gutierrez filled the void as he led the Huskies’ running attack with bursts of 21, 23, and 78-yards on his first three carries. He topped it off by going 23 yards around left end for a score to give South Hills a 32-10 lead with 7:11 to play.
The senior, who does a little bit of everything, had eight carries for 145 yards and a touchdown. He added 53 yards on two receptions for a total of 198 yards on offense. He also booted a a 25 yard field goal 55 seconds before halftime to begin the Huskies’ stampede.
Baldwin Park fell behind 9-0 early before fighting back to take the lead 10-9 after quarterback Mario Rodriguez’s 19-yard pass to Demetrius Jackson and a Jaime Toscano 25 yard field goal. Rodriguez went 16 of 23 for 130 yards and two TD’s – both to Jackson.
During the Huskies 29 point run Vince Hernandez fired a pair of touchdown passes. He finished the night 9-14 for 142 yards and two scores. Both of those scores were to tight end Josh Delagardelle from 30 and 7 yards out.
South Hills linebacker Jacob Farias intercepted Rodriguez at midfield off a tip by Ralphie Bingochea and returned it 35 yards to the Braves’ 15. Three plays later Bingochea put the game away with a 16 yard scoring romp with 5:00 to play.
The Braves’ Rodriguez-Jackson connection ignited again 85 seconds later on an 11 yarder to close out the scoring. Wardell Crutchfield III had a 28 yard reception and 9 carries for 33 yards to complement the BP offense.
