Cougars Can’t Finish in Overtime

(Azusa) – Azusa Pacific was outscored 10-2 over the last three minutes and 30 seconds of overtime and fell to Chaminade 84-81 Wednesday night at Felix Event Center.

Tied after four quarters at 74 the Cougars scored the first five points in overtime. A basket by Kaleb Taylor put Azusa Pacific up 79-74 with 3:39 left. Nathan Medina then hit a three for Chaminade and Nate Sasser III hit a basket inside to give the Silverswords an 80-79 lead with 1:30 left.

Parker Christensen scored for Azusa Pacific but Brycen Shackleford knocked down a pair of free throws to give Chaminade an 82-81 lead with 24 seconds left. After the Cougars turned the ball over Medina hit two free throws with three ticks left to ice it.

The Cougars had one last chance but were unable to get a shot off as the clock ran out.

Azusa Pacific battled back from a deficit in the fourth quarter and had an opportunity to win it. Shad Thomas threw down a slam and followed it up with a steal and a bucket for Azusa Pacific to tie it at 72 with 26 seconds left.

With four seconds left in the fourth quarter and APU down 73-72, Caleb Oden scored on a put back off of an offensive rebound for a 74-73 Cougars lead. But Medina drove the lane and was fouled on the next possession. He hit one of two free throws for Chaminade to send the game to overtime.

The two teams played it close in the first half as well. Kent King had 11 points and Medina added 10 as Chaminade took a 42-40 lead into halftime. Tied at 26 the Silverswords’ King hit a three to spark a 10-2 run for an eight-point lead.

Azusa Pacific was able get back to within two at the break as EJ Bryson had 11 for the Cougars to lead the way in the first half. Thomas scored eight and DJ Sanders and Tobias Aisien each had six.

There were nine lead changes in the game and it was tied 11 times including after four quarters.

For the Cougars Thomas led the team with 16 points and Bryson had 15. Christensen and Oden each had 10. Aisien had eight points and led the team in rebounds with 10.

Chaminade had five players in double figures. Kris King and Kent King each had 17, Medina scored 16, Sasser had 13 and Banks added 10. APU outrebounded Chaminade 51-47.

Chaminade improved to 6-4 overall and 4-0 in the PacWest Conference with the victory while the Cougars fell to 1-6 and 0-3.
