Schurr Surprised by Cantwell

(Montebello) – Jonathan Mesa rushed for five touchdowns and 335 yards lead Cantwell-Sacred Heart to a 49-28 win over Schurr Friday night on the Spartans home field.

Mesa ran over through and around the Spartan defense in a memorable performance. Three of his scores came on runs of 50, 64 and 61 yards. Mesa’s 50 yard touchdown romp late in the first half gave the Cardinals a 21-7 lead.

Chris Chiaromonte responded by returning the ensuing kick off for a touchdown. He took a reverse and got loose down the sidelines and Schurr was down by just seven at the half.

Schurr got even early in the third quarter. Willie Torres picked off a Christian Espinoza pass and walked in for the score to tie it at 21. Then the wheels came off the Spartan wagon.

Mesa went 64 yards for a touchdown on the first play of the next series. After Schurr was stopped on its possession, Mesa took it to the house again. This time it was a 61 yard dash across the goal line.

A bad snap on a punt attempt by Schurr put Cantwell in striking position again at the Spartan 30. The Cards immediately cashed in on the opportunity when Espinoza scored on a one yard sneak just before the end of the third. Just like that it was 42-21 Cardinals and a rather heavy set lady was warming up her vocal chords on the far sideline.

Aaron Cantu connected with Eric Magos on a 29 yard TD strike late in the game. But again, as they seemed to all night, the Cards answered back. Adam Aguirre hauled in an 18 yard touchdown pass with 59 seconds left in the contest to finish off the scoring.

Next week Schurr will host Downey while Cantwell hosts Baldwin Park.
