Burroughs Falls in Canyon

Burroughs may be 0-2 but quarterback Lucas Yanez is off to a fast start.

(Canyon Country)- Burroughs and Canyon traded punches for four quarters, but it was the Cowboys who landed the last blow in a 37-31 victory on Saturday night.

Quarterback Jonathan Jerozal pushed himself through the line for 3-yards and a touchdown with 2:22 to play to push Canyon ahead for the final time.

A late Burroughs push ended with Lucas Yanez’s pass falling incomplete at the Cowboys ten.

At the 5:33 mark Yanez capped a desperate drive to tie the game at 31. First hitting slot receiver Matt Volland on fourth down from 3-yards out and then connecting with Volland again for the game tying deuce.

Both teams traded touchdowns in the first period before the Indians jumped on top with a 26-yard field goal by Cristobal Escobar. Canyon answered immediately when Darius Rudolph scored on a 1-yard run. The highlight of the brief drive was Rudolph’s 68-yard kick-off return to the Burroughs 20.

Trailing 14-10, Yanez led his team on another long march, with the critical moment coming on fourth and goal at the Canyon one on the final play of the first half. Forgoing the field goal Knoop went for the touchdown, but in a shotgun formation the ball was snapped over Yanez’s head.

In the third Yanez scored on a 1-yard run and hit Zander Anding on 76-yard skinny post to build a 23-14 lead in favor of the Indians.

Canyon closed the gap with a field goal then retook the lead when Jerozal connected with Drew Wolitarsky for a 22-yard score.

Two minutes later Rudolph scored on another short run and the Cowboys had a 31-23 lead.

The loss was the second in as many weeks for Burroughs, now 0-2, by six points. Canyon is now 1-0.
