(Azusa)- Back-to-back Montview league champion Azusa is now 2-0 after defeating Ontario Christian 31-10 Thursday night at Citrus College behind the legs of Quarterback Jose Nunez.

Nunez scored on touchdown runs of 9, 30, and 8 yards, returned an interception 65 yards to the house, and converted a 30 yard field goal to score all 31 points for Azusa.

“He’s one of the best players I’ve seen here at Azusa,” said Aztec Head Coach Joe Scherf, who has led Azusa to a 23-4 record and back-to-back league titles since taking the reigns in 2008. “He’s probably one of the best players in the valley.”

Nunez also lit it up with his arm, completing passes to 10 different Aztec receivers and totaling 222 yards on 12-for-17 pass attempts.

Kyle Ellis of Ontario Christian only completed 5 of 18 pass attempts for 50 yards and 2 interceptions.

“We got to get the mental toughness,” said Ontario Christian Coach Lang Stevens. “Were a little soft. If something goes wrong we fall apart.”

The score was tied at 7 apiece after Ontario Christian’s Mike Salas ran in a 3-yard touchdown with 57 seconds left in the first quarter, which was set up by a 30- yard pass from Ellis to Jordan Kloosterman.

Azusa answered back with a Nunez 30- yard burst to the end zone to make it 14-7 with 10 minutes left in the second. The Aztec defense held tough and it was 28-7 at halftime after two more touchdown runs by Nunez.

Edwin Garcia had two sacks for the Aztecs and Desmond Reed also came up with a diving sideline interception.

“The defense is the rock of my team,” said Scherf. “We have really good defense players out there and we come off the edge really well.”

Azusa plays Gabrielino next week at Citrus. Ontario Christian and the Knights have a home game against Jurupa Valley.
