Cougars Maul Saints

By Johnathan Saller

(San Dimas) – Rancho Cucamonga put up 21 quick points on San Dimas in the first half, and held on 21-10 Friday night. Quarterback Dimitri Morales threw for two touchdowns on 11 of 16 passing and running back Sateki Finau found paydirt in the first quarter on his way to 130 yards on 20 carries.

The Saints had an opportunity to get back in the game when a 13 play drive put them at Rancho’s one with one second remaining in the half. Running back Angel Gonzalez got the call and failed to gain the yardage as he was met by a host of Cougars falling an inch short.

“It would’ve still been a war…we punched ourselves tonight,” head coach Bill Zernickow said on the goal line stand.

The Saints defense stuffed the Cougars in the second half giving its offense an opportunity to get back in the game. San Dimas settled for a 22-yard field goal late in the third and quarterback Codee Watts connected with Kevin Kolbeck on a 28-yard strike in the end zone to pull within 11.

The Saints never got another good opportunity but Coach Z took the loss in stride, “We’re San Dimas High School and we’re playing Rancho Cucamonga, our kids had to learn to play at a different speed.”

Next week San Dimas (1-2) is at home against Monrovia and Rancho Cucamonga (3-0) takes on Charter Oak.

Scoring Summary:
