@ Anon, Yup, Friday Night Lights season is the best. Always a surprise or two each night of games. I think back to last year when LC was rolling coming into SP and SP had been scuffling with the non league schedule. Everyone picked LC as they should with both Bell and Paper tearing it up. 8 out of 10 times LC will win that game but on that night the SP Defense slowed LC’s duel threat and the offense was good enough for a surprise win which sent them off to a RHL title. It was such a fun game to be at. I look forward to more of those this coming season.
Every team has to go through that and the best teams usually develop new players to step in to roles that were held by graduating players. South Pas has done that the last 3 years and I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt to do it again. But that is no guarantee, every year is a new year so we’ll just have to wait and see. Should be another great year of high school football! Can’t wait!
@Anon yes I guess ties count too. They are indeed the most successful Rio Hondo League team post COVID with very deep runs into CIF. Prior to 2022, they hadn’t won a Rio Hondo League title since the 1970’s. They have experienced a rebirth but I also know they lost talent (some college level players) to graduation the last two years. They were fortunate to have 4 years in a row of having a beast at running back with Hong followed by Freking.
3 time defending champs (yes shared titles count too). They are the most consistent and successful program from the old RHL having won multiple games in multiple playoffs on top of the league titles. All while being a run 1st team and everyone knew what hey were going to do and still couldn’t stop them. They SHOULD be in the top league and I think its fortunate for the other teams in the top league that they don’t have South pas with them.
Even though South Pas is the two time defending Rio Hondo League Champs, they may have lucked out by being placed in the Boulder League instead of the Arroyo League. An Arroyo League placement would have probably killed any CIF chance for them. In the Boulder League they become 1 or 2 along CV and San Marino probably 3. The game on 9/11 against LC will be a good one. Although there is questions about PHS, a SPHS vs PHS match up is long overdue.
