Team Florez puts on a Night of Knockouts

Mid Valley Staffer and MMA Fighter/Boxer Big George Hernandez

(La Puente) – We know it’s all about football right now. But one of our own – Big George Hernandez –  fought Saturday night so we wanted to give him his props.  We updated the other fights as well. Mark De La Cruz and Alan Florez put on an exciting day of fights at Team Florez Muay Thai and MMA in La Puente. Out of nine official fights only two went to decision.

Chara Maldoniya (The Yard) vs. Marlene Vazquez (Shotokan Karate)

Muay Thai – Maldoniya came out on all cylinders landing with kicks to the body and straight right hands on Vasquez. Vasquez stood tough in the first round and landed a couple flurries of her own.

To start the second round the referee warned Vasquez if the fight keeps going that way he will stop the fight. Maldoniya came out to stop the fight and that’s what she did land punches and kicks at will. Vasquez stood there and tried to exchange but it just wasn’t enough and the referee was forced to stop the fight.

Lee pounds Porter; Oliveros makes St. Nicholas Quit

MMA – Carl Lee (CSW) looked like a man on a mission against Daniel Porter (Mayhem MMA). Lee took down Porter at will and controlled the fight. Late in the first round Lee got full mount and landed some hard ground and pound and the referee was forced to stop the fight.

Muay Thai – Ulysses Oliveros (Team Florez) took on Christian St. Nicholas (Rojas Fight Center). Oliveros got an early knock down with a straight right that landed right on the button. Later in the round St. Nicholas felt the canvas again with a combination by Oliveros.

Going into the second round St. Nicholas looked finished. Oliveros noticed and immediately looked to end the fight. He then dropped St. Nicholas who had had enough as he eventually gave up.

Diaz handles Young; Navarro dominates Orosco

Muay Thai – Luiston “Chickenman” Diaz (Team Florez) took it to Ryan Young (The Yard).

Diaz showed his speed landing flurries of punches and kicks. Young hit the canvas in the second round when he ate a right hand from Diaz. Diaz never let up and worked Young for all three rounds and won a unanimous decision.

MMA – Nick Navarro (CSW) showed out his wrestling skills against Eddie Orosco (Mayhem MMA). Navarro took down Orosco every round and controlled the bout. Navarro looked to stop the fight in the second and landed some hard ground and pound but Orosco was able to roll out. Navarro won an easy unanimous decision.

Hernandez and Castaneda put on Boxing Exhibition

Boxing – Mid Valley Sports staffer and Mountain View alum George Hernandez (Team Florez) faced South El Monte wrestling Coach John Castaneda (Valdez Muay Thai) in a friendly boxing exhibition.

Both fighters landed solid punches and put on a show for the packed house. Hernandez got in some work before his big fight September 26th at Showdown MMA in Covina when he fights at Quake in the Cage presented by Ring of Fire and Old School Promotions.
