South El Monte (5-1) at Arroyo (5-1)
Last Year: Arroyo 42-0
All-Time: Arroyo 12-5
South El Monte has surprised everybody so far this year. Winning five of its first six games seemed like impossibility in August. First year Coach Ibis Aguilar has done a masterful job of turning the Eagles around.
Arroyo is about where we expected. The Knights only slipped up against Hart and a lot of people have slipped against Hart.
South’s toughest test to date was Bell Gardens and it failed that test. The Eagles won’t win here either. Arroyo is the class of the MVL right now. It will show here.

Alhambra (5-1) at Schurr (1-5)
Last Year: Schurr 44-13
Schurr finally got off the floor last week in a 7-0 win over Bell Gardens. The shock wasn’t so much the victory but that the Spartans were able to hold down BG’s offense. Schurr’s defense has been anything but stout this year.
The Moors rebounded last week to beat Keppel after losing to South Pas a couple of weeks ago. Josh Mendoza, Demetrius Russell and company should score enough to win. If not, the Schurr is suddenly the Almont favorite. The Moors hold on.

MVL
El Monte (4-2) at Mt. View (3-3)
Last Year: El Monte 28-21
All-Time: El Monte 27-12
El Monte is coming off a huge win over Rosemead last week. It was the type of win that can lead the Lions to bigger and better things. Mt. View lost to Arroyo. Okay. But the Viking faithful was hoping it wouldn’t have been 42-3.
After beating the Mead the Lions have their sights set on an MVL title. They’re not about to let the Vikings get in the way of that. Lions win big.
El Monte 38 Mt. View 9
Rosemead (3-3) at Gabrielino (3-3)
Last Year: Rosemead 42-6
All-Time: Rosemead 9-4
Gabrielino surprisingly gave South El Monte all it wanted. Rosemead had a lead late before falling to El Monte. The Panthers are suddenly playing for a playoff berth. They could fall to Arroyo later in the year but they can’t afford a loss to the Eagles.
I wonder how hard Coach Matt Koffler is on his troops this week? The El Monte loss is eating away at their gut. Gabrielino will be the ones to pay.

Montview League
Sierra Vista (3-3) at La Puente (6-0)
Last Year: La Puente 33-21
La Puente is thinking about running the table. The Warriors have three games left before the week ten showdown with defending champ Azusa.
Sierra Vista has been up and down. The Dons were up last week in a one point win over Gladstone. They’ll be down this week. All LP.

Whittier Christian (4-3) at Maranatha (6-0)
Last Year: Whittier Christian 31-24
Coach Sergio Gradilla and Whittier Christian pay a visit to an old friend at Maranatha when former DC Pete Karavedas is now the HC at Maranatha.
The Heralds are tough and are coming off a shut out win over LA Baptist. The question is can they contain the high powered offense of Maranatha. Darrien McGee, Andrew Elffers and company can score in a heartbeat.
South Pas was even with Maranatha at the half and Whittier Christian should hang around as well. But eventually the Minutemen will get you. Maranatha pulls away in fourth.

Rio Hondo League
La Canada (1-5) at South Pasadena (4-2)
Last Year: La Canada 28-21
South Pasadena has emerged as a contender in the Rio Hondo. Okay, well a contender for second place. La Canada battled Arroyo a couple of weeks ago before being shellacked by Monrovia last week.
Kyle Herron is tough to bring down. But if the Tigers can slow him down they’ll do enough offensively to win. South Pas improves to 2-0 in the Rio.

Temple City (0-6) at San Marino (4-2)
Last Year: Temple City 31-21
All-Time: Temple City 37-18-2
At first glance, it looks like San Marino in a rout. But when the Titans have been tested by teams like Bell Gardens and Rosemead they have fallen short.
Temple City has fallen short every time out and most of them haven’t been close. You figure they have to win sooner or later don’t they? Quarterback Mikal Quintanilla was out last week with an injury. If he’s still sidelined it makes the road even rougher for the Rams.
San Marino should get it done.

Valle Vista League
San Dimas (5-1) at Covina (6-1) at Covina District Field
Last Year: Covina 27-23
Well at least the arguments will finally end about who is the best team in the Mid-Valley Division. Covina’s one loss was to West Covina, (the best team in the Southeast) in overtime. San Dimas’ one loss was to Bonita in the Smudgepot back in Zero Week.
Covina has struggled to get a couple of wins since then but the Colts were without quarterback Billy Livingston. He came back last week and the Colts went on a stampede. San Dimas has been rolling since that opening night loss.
The Colts like to throw it with Livingston and Vinny Venegas but can also run it with Gevontray Ainsworth. The Saints like to run it with…take you pick…Domonic Jollevet, Dillon Corona, Devante Brown, etc, etc, but can throw it of they have to with Shawn Kennedy.
Something has to give. Right now San Dimas has the edge. The Saints could eventually wear the Colts down. Saints get it done. Of course if that doesn’t happen what I really meant was Colts hold on.
