(PASADENA) — With 45 seconds left in the fourth quarter, down 21-20, Maranatha quarterback Marco Martinez was picked of by Arcadia linebacker Clayton Barnett giving the Apaches the go-ahead win over the Minutemen Friday night at Maranatha high school.
With 6:02 left in the fourth quarter and the game tied at 14, the Apaches took five plays to drive down the field to take the lead. Running back Bradley Mills scored on a six-yard touchdown run. Arcadia took the 21-14 lead mid-way through the fourth quarter.
However, the Minutemen answered right back when they compiled at nine-play, 73-yard drive of their own to come within one point. Unfortunately Alejandro Lopez missed the extra point. Arcadia lead 21-20 with 2:54 left in the fourth.
The Minutemen defense stonewalled the Apaches forcing them on a quick three and out. Maranatha had possession of the ball at their 32 with 48 seconds left to play.
On their first play, Martinez dropped back and completed the pass to Dexter Meyers who carried the ball to the endzone but a pass interference penalty that was called on Meyers taking the touchdown away. Two plays later Martinez was picked off, sealing the win for Arcadia.
At the start of the game, Arcadia’s offense was always down every time they took the field. They went down 7-0 early in the first quarter when Martinez connected with Dmitri Mata for 37-yard touchdown pass.
Arcadia was able to tie the ball game up at seven before the first quarter ended. Quarterback Nico Hillier handed the ball to Mills who took it the endzone from 20-yards out.
Marantha’s Mata broke the tie again late in the first quarter when he returned Arcadia’s punt 83-yards. Mata push his team to a 14-7 lead with 2:44 left in the first.
