Schurr quarterback Jacob Torres sat down for a Q&A.
By George Hernandez
[Montebello] – I sat down with Schurr quarterback Jacob Torres who led the Spartans to a 7-4 record and an undefeated league title as a freshman. Torres’s threw for 1,226 with 15-touchdowns and only four interceptions he also added three rushing scores.
Q: What’s up kid, how’s it going?
A: It’s been going good. I’ve been putting in a lot of work in the weight room and out on the field. The team is looking sharp and we’re all excited for the season coming up.
Q: You had a great freshmen year personally and as a team how are you going to get better from last year?
A: I’ve got a year of varsity experience under my belt now, so I feel way more confident and comfortable. I know what’s expected from me and what I need to do. I’ve been working every day in the weight room and on the field, and honestly I feel more faster and stronger than ever. I’ve also been watching a lot of film from last season, learning from mistakes and finding things I can improve on. I’m getting more competitive every day and I’m ready for the season.
Q: Every athlete has a routine. What does your game day look like from the moment you wake up until you step onto the field?
A: My game day really starts the night before making sure all my stuff is ready. Then I get to school and we have our team walk-throughs in the morning. During the school day everyone’s wearing jerseys and the energy is just different with the pep rallies and everything. We usually get out early around fifth or sixth period, then we head to the locker room and change into something comfortable. After that we go eat our team meal together with the coaches. Once that’s done we start locking in for the game. We do another walk-through before early outs, then it’s team warm-ups. After warm-ups we head back into the locker room and coach gives us that final talk to get us ready. Then we head to the field. I take a moment to say my prayer and it’s game time.
Q: Who do you model your game after?
A: I’d say Dak Prescott and Patrick Mahomes. I like how Dak controls the game and stays accurate while still being able to throw the deep ball. Mahomes is just a playmaker all around. He can make every throw and use his legs to create plays too. Guys like that are a nightmare for defenses to deal with.
Q: How would your teammates and coaches describe you?
A: I would hope they would say I’m hardworking, competitive, determined and humble. I would also hope they see me as a good teammate and someone they can count on as a leader.
Q: What is your goal for the team and you personally this upcoming football season?
A: For the team, the goal is to win every game we can, go undefeated in the regular season, win our new league and make a deep playoff run all the way to CIF. We want to play physical and be the team nobody wants to face. Personally, I want to put up big numbers passing and running. I want to be more of a game changer and make defenses have to focus their whole game plan around stopping me. I also want to get attention from college coaches and reporters and continue building my name.
Q: What is the biggest lesson you have learned from sports so far?
A: The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that nothing comes easy. If you really want something you’ve got to work for it every day. I’ve also learned that every opportunity is a blessing because not everybody gets the same chances.
Q: How do you handle the pressure of playing in high-stakes games?
A: Honestly, I enjoy the pressure. I like the intensity and the feeling of big games with everybody watching. At the same time, I try to stay calm, focused, and locked in on doing my job.
Q: You’re still a freshman but what are your plans after high school when it comes to sports?
A: I definitely want to play college football. It doesn’t matter what level because any opportunity to keep playing the game I love is a blessing. I just want to continue growing and make something out of it.
Q: Anything else you would like to say or want us to know?
A: First, I want to thank my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for blessing me with every opportunity on and off the field. Without Him I wouldn’t be the person I am today. I also want to thank my mom, dad, brother, and the rest of my family for always supporting me no matter what. I appreciate my teammates and the seniors from last season for taking me under their wing and trusting me to lead as quarterback. I also want to thank my coaches from last season, head coach Austin Montoya and my quarterback coach Miguel Aguero. Even though we aren’t on the same team anymore it’s always love and respect. I also want to thank all the coaches who’ve invested in me since my youth football days, especially my quarterback coaches who’ve helped shape and develop me over the years. To my teammates and coaches now, I appreciate everybody battling through the tough times together. We’ve already faced a lot but that’s all part of the process. I’m going to give everything I’ve got for my brothers this season. I’m ready to work, compete, and get after it. We’re going to have fun, keep growing, and win a lot of games this year.
