(La Puente)-Azusa opened Montview League play by shutting out its third opponent in four games as the Aztecs, now 4-0, blanked La Puente 28-0 on Friday night at La Puente High School.

“We just work hard,” Azusa Coach Joe Scherf said after his team shed potentially its toughest Montview league competition. “We take it one game at a time.”

Josh Nunez found Eddie Franco on an 11-yard curl rout in the end zone to cap off a 58 yard drive, converting a Josh Perez fumble into the 7-0 lead with 6:47 remaining in the second quarter for Azusa.

But it was quarterback Jake Martinez, 7 of 10 for 162 yards passing, who provided the big play when he hit Brian Nieto for a 70-yard touchdown.

After a quick three-and-out, Azusa used an 8 play drive and this time it was team Captain Steven Blount cutting up field for a 4-yard touchdown run and the score was 14-0 with 2:10 remaining in the second.

On the first play of the ensuing possession, Perez had the ball squirt out of his hands and   Blount was there to scoop up the live ball and run it in 13-yards for a 21-0 Aztec lead at halftime.

The Warriors had scoring opportunities stifled by a stingy Aztec defense and turnovers turned out to be costly for LP.

“Can’t turn the ball over,” La Puente Coach Brandon Rohrer said. “We can’t do that.”

Nieto’s 70-yard touchdown gave Azusa a 28-0 lead with under a minute left in the third and put a fork in the game with one quarter remaining.

Azusa looks to continue its unbeaten streak when it takes on Sierra Vista next week.
