Alvarez and Medina Lead the Way For La Serna in Win

La Serna's Richard Alvarez turns the corner against Santa Fe

(Whittier) – La Serna’s offense and defense had their most complete game enroute to a 38-0 blow-out of Santa Fe to take another step toward its first Del Rio League title in 29-years.

O.J Medina ran for 135 yards on 11 carries and a score, while Richard Alvarez bruised his way through the Chiefs defense for 132 yards and a touchdown to lead the Lancers on offense. Quarterback Andrew Buenrostro was flawless going eight of eight for 127 yards and touchdown.

Alvarez’s two-yard run early in the second quarter gave the Lancers a 21-0 lead and basically broke the back of a confident Chiefs defense which came into the game allowing just 71 points in its previous six games.

Santa Fe never really got on track offensively early in the game with a four and out to start the game and a drive stalling at their 49-yard line on its second possession.

After the Chief drive stalled, Santa Fe downed Manuel Meza’s 50-yard punt inside the La Serna 1-yard line. Santa Fe received the early break they were looking for pinning the Lancers inside the shadow of its own end zone. O.J. Medina answered the call from the three-yard line found a whole at the five and out ran the Chiefs secondary on the second play from scrimmage for a 97-yard touchdown that gave La Serna a 14-0 lead.

The biggest blow the entire evening was Santa Fe’s inability to keep the Lancers deep inside the 20-yard line on numerous possessions. Of the nine offensive series run by La Serna, four began inside the 20-yard line. Three of those were turned in Lancer touchdowns.

The Chiefs only bright spot was the play of Alex Mirola who closed the night with 121 yards rushing on 12 carries. Mirola also caught four passes for 28 yards.

Justin Rincon struggled for Santa Fe at quarterback going 14 of 28 for 128 yards and three interceptions. La Serna’s defense sacked Rincon three times.

Meza’s attempt at a 49-yard field goal as time expired at the end of the first half would be the closest the Chiefs would come to scoring the entire evening.

Buenrostro would add the exclamation point on the Homecoming victory when he found Andrew Rosales deep for a 54-yard touchdown reception with 11:17 remaining in the game.
