(Montebello)- Ricardo Pena’s 36-yard field goal split the uprights with 37 seconds remaining to give Bell Gardens a 12=10 victory over Montebello Friday night in Almont League play.
The Oilers took their first and only lead of the game with 2:14 to play after the Lancers fumbled the ball for the third time on the night. Montebello kicker Juan Hernandez booted a 39-yard field goal to give his team a 10-9 lead.
BG got on the board first when Steve Ibarra scored on a 5-yard run with 1:24 to play in the first quarter.
Montebello tied the score with seven seconds left in the first after quarterback Fernando Hoffens drove his team down field and hit Robert Zamorano with an 11-yard touchdown pass. The play became controversial when it was argued that Zamorano had gone out of bounds and then came back in. The score stood, Hernandez added the point after, and it was knotted at 7-7 at the break.
Neither team could muster much offense in the third quarter but Bell Gardens got the break it needed to take the lead when Hernandez muffed the snap on a punt and was tackled in the end zone. The safety gave the Lancers a 9-7 lead with 2:25 to play in the third.
The score would remain 9-7 until the teams traded field goals in the final minutes.
The victory evened BG’s Almont record at 1-1, 4-3 overall. For Montebello they fell to 1-1 in league and 2-5 overall.
