(Pasadena) – Rand Holdren has stepped down as the head football coach at Maranatha to take over as the head coach at Village Christian he confirmed Friday.
Holdren was the head coach at Maranatha for five years guiding the Minutemen to the CIF playoffs three times. Last year Maranatha went 7-4 overall (4-1 in the Mesquite League) and fell to Baldwin Park 42-28 in the first round of the CIF Division 11 playoffs.
Holdren will now step in as the head coach at Village Christian where he takes over for Richard Broussard. Broussard resigned after eight seasons at the helm.
“I am incredibly grateful and excited for the opportunity to serve as the next Head Football Coach at Village Christian. I feel truly called to be part of a community that values faith, character, and excellence both on and off the field. I am honored to step into this role and can’t wait to get to work with these student-athletes,” Holdren said in a press release by the school.

I attended one of my grandson’s scrimmages which were held at El Monte High where various high schools were participating. My grandson and other Maranatha players had completed a game and were sitting on a bench waiting for their next scrimmage. Holdren walked directly up to my grandson and yelled at him to pick up the trash left on the ground. I was taken aback by this since the trash was not anywhere near where my grandson was sitting and he did not bring any food with him to the game, only a water bottle. Being a respectful young man, my grandson immediately picked up the trash (again, not his trash). I was taken aback or should I say shocked by Holdren’s unhinged behavior which was totally unprofessional. I held back from saying anything to Holdren because I knew my grandson would not want that and possibly be further embarrassed. The next scrimmage was on the main field. Maranatha was playing well but did not win. Holdren once again became unhinged and was visibly upset; yelling at the team.
I could go on but I will just say it is a blessing that my grandson switched to playing soccer instead…
Their is another head scratcher. Jeff Bailey left Yorba Linda after 4 CIF championships and 11 league titles. He left for 0-10 Beverly Hills. No booster program over there for a cash bonus and now 7 dollar gas. Go figure.
An old song goes: “the games people play, every night and every day; never sayin’ what they mean, and never meaning what they say.” So true for all these guys who make smooth, non-volatile statements on their way out, especially at such a late date. We who are not privy to the inside story here are left to wonder what really happened, because the politically correct version above is obviously lacking the meat of the matter.
If you only make decisions because of money, you’ll end up in some really unique spots in your life.
As Bob Marley quipped, “Money makes you rich?”
Imagine Village got close or beat Maranatha’s money but I doubt that was the whole or even main consideration. Lots of reasons to make a move. It’s not always just money.

@MD: Interesting. So coach left his team for a team that pays a lot less money. Great. That may start a whole new career trend. Look for a job that you like that pays you less than the job you have now. Got it. Teachers should start striking for less money and benfits.
Never heard of this guy. He plies his trade at the minor league privates. VC another private must have made him an offer he can’t refuse considering he is abandoning his team late in the game.
Based on reported data, the average monthly pay for a head coach at Maranatha High School is approximately $5,684, while the average for a head coach at Village Christian School is lower, at approximately $3,087 per month. Coach Holdren isn’t doing this for the money he’s doing this to grow more student athletes and help them become better men your “educated guess” is not true or fair.
Coach Holdren is an amazing coach. I wish him all the best! He has given so much to our kids, more than most, and i’m so thankful to him. Kids were really sad when he told them yesterday. Lots of tears. That’s the kind of parson we had and we need a lot more.
This is devastating to our football program and the entire school. Coach was one of the best things going at Maranatha.
I don’t know how the school moves forward after this. Who is responsible? Couldn’t be a money thing. I’m looking for other schools where my son can continue to play football with great coaches, people and leaders.
Holdren’s excitement to feel the faith at Village Christian, which is apparently greater than the faith they have at Maranatha, is probably fueled by a bigger paycheck than what the Minutemen were able to wrest from God’s wallet.
