Game Night Mid-Valley Division: Week Eight

Tim Peterson

Friday October 29

Almont

Montebello (2-5) at Alhambra (4-3)

Last Year: Alhambra 32-27

Both teams are coming off of losses – Alhambra lost big to Schurr while Montebello fell by a deuce to Bell Gardens. Montebello has been in every game this year with the exception of a 20 point loss to ER.

If Fernando Hoffens can find a few more open receivers it could be difficult for the Moors. Can Josh Mendoza and Alhambra move the ball enough against the Montebello defense? This time Montebello wins the close one.

Bell Gardens (4-3) at San Gabriel (3-4)

Last Year: San Gabriel 49-28

The Matadors offense has been putting plenty of points on the board. It’s the defense that has been a little suspect. The Mats have given up 46, 44 and 27 points in games this year.

BG likes to pound the ball and stay on the ground. The Lancers will need to chew up yardage to keep the ball away from the SG offense. If they have several three and outs early, it could be a tough night.

MVL

Arroyo (6-1) at Gabrielino (3-4)

Last Year: Arroyo 41-0

All-Time: Arroyo 10-2

The defense did the job last week against Rosemead with a couple of big picks. But the offense had its moments too. With Steven Rivera, there will plenty of moments in this one.

Gabrielino, (0-2 in the MVL), is fighting for its playoff life. Unfortunately for the Eagle faithful, 2010 life ends against the Knights.

Rosemead (4-3) at Mt. View (4-3)

Last Year: Rosemead 41-7

All-Time: Rosemead 33-3

It’s been an electric season so far for Mt. View but the light will burn out here. The Panthers will be angry group after falling to Arroyo.

The Vikes made history last week but there will be now they’ll get a dose of reality. Matt Fregoso runs wild.

South El Monte (1-6) at El Monte (3-4)

Last Year: South El Monte 22-19

All-Time: South El Monte 13-3

The second annual Griffin Bowl features two teams headed in opposite directions. El Monte is 2-0 in the MVL while South is 0-2. The Lions have to be careful of not getting caught looking ahead. But even is they do, they should still win by two touchdowns.

Lions win third straight.

Montview

La Puente (5-2) at Sierra Vista (5-2)

Last Year: La Puente 41-7

As the season rolls on it’s becoming clear that not only is Azusa the best team in the Montview but that La Puente is the second best team. It appeared Sierra Vista might be that team but last week the Dons fell to G-Stone 9-7.

Throw out the Azusa loss and LP has outscored its league opponents 126-35. The Warriors will roll again here.

Olympic

Whittier Christian (6-1) at Valley Christian (5-3)

Last Year: Valley Christian 28-14

While Whittier Christian was relaxing during the bye week, Valley Christian was going five overtimes with Maranatha. The Crusaders have a potent defense but the points will be a lot harder to come by against the Heralds’ defense.

Whittier Christian is a hard to team to beat on any Friday night. But for Valley Christian a rested Heralds’ team might be impossible.

Rio Hondo

Temple City (3-4) at Monrovia (5-2) – at Maranatha H.S

Last Year: Monrovia 38-21

All-Time: Temple City 14-13-1

The Rams have surprised us all. Although after seeing what Coach Mike McFarland did with Pasadena last season, it shouldn’t come as a shock that he has turned Temple City into a playoff contender. After a 27-15 win over La Canada, TC is 2-0 in the Rio.

The Rams might still make the playoffs but they won’t win the league. Monrovia will take care of that. The Wildcats simply have too much. Although their first two Rio Hondo opponents- Blair and San Marino- aren’t exactly world beaters- it’s scary to see that Monrovia has outscored them 113-0. Cats keep rolling.

Valle Vista

Wilson (4-3) at Baldwin Park (2-5)

Wilson got off the floor last week in the Valle Vista but when the opponent is Nogales, there’s no reason to throw a party. Baldwin Park fell in a hard hitting physical contest against Covina.

With San Dimas and the Colts out of the way, the Braves can focus on winning out and taking second in the V-Vista. By the way Quarterback Mario Rodriguez can hit too.

Pomona (3-4) at Covina (7-1) – Covina District Field

Last Year: Covina 7-2

As of Sunday Covina quarterback Billy Livingston was day to day. He was released from the hospital Thursday night after being knocked out by a Rodriguez hit and he even attended school on Friday. His status might be known until Wednesday. There is no concussion.

Even with back up Daniel Sifuentes under center the Colts should be fine. With Vinny Venegas doing his thing and weapons like Gevontray Ainsworth and Remontay McClain at the ready it’s difficult for opposing defenses to overcome. Covina remains unbeaten in league.
