Good Evening!

Cannot believe it’s already basketball season…The Supersonics are going to have a big year.

***

Montebello at Alhambra this week at Moor Field essentially comes down to a loser leaves town…Or in this case loser can most likely kiss the playoffs goodbye. Big game, buku important.

Same is true for Rowland and Walnut.

“It was a great character win for our program,” sayd Covina HC Darryl Thomas about his team’s victory over Baldwin Park last Friday after Billy Livingston was knocked out of the game. “The players banded together and really showed what can happen when people put their minds and hearts working as one. Billy was cleared to play from the doctor’s on Saturday. He is good to go for this week.”

The Mid: Is your team exhausted emotionally after tough back to back losses?

Maranatha HC Joel Murphy: “I think the hardest part in dealing with the losses in both games is that fact that we had it to win. I don’t know if I would go as far as saying it’s “exhausted” them because I honestly think this is what’s kept them engaged. They are literally learning that they can play in this division. They’ve proved to themselves they can play. In the beginning they were a little unsure of where they stood in the Mid-Valley. After La Canada they got a lot of confidence. After Whittier Christian they got a little more. And hopefully after this week, they’ll get even more. We’re focusing on finishing out strong and making a solid case for our at-large bid.”

Last Add Maranatha: No word yet on Chris Cornell and the knee injury he suffered versus Valley Christian…Omar Younger who was also injured in the VC game has been cleared and is good to go.

***

I like Whittier Christian, after a week off, against Valley Christian…

***

Been harping on San Dimas HC Bill Zernickow’s statement that his team has not been playing good football…I’ve wanted to know when they are going to start playing up to their potential because time was running out.

“We are starting to play or best ball at the right time,” said Zernickow this week. “So we will see, got a few guys back and that always helps.”

Griffin Bowl II: Part of the week’s event leading to the South El Monte-El Monte battle for the Griffin Bowl will include a barbeque on Thursday starting at 5:30 P.M. at EMHS. There will be hot dog and pie eating contests, and for a buck Lions HC Joel Sanchez and Southman HC Ray Hernandez will let you fire pie into their face.

This will become an annual event.

Temple City over Monrovia?

No.

Note to Mike McFarland: Compete, take notes, and above all stay healthy. No Rams on crutches or in slings means victories over South Pasadena and Blair… Oh yeah, and a return to the playoffs.

***

On this night in 1973; Arroyo beat Keppel 3-0 on Rick Granados’ 39-yard field goal in the third quarter…At Rosemead Mike Rust bulled his way in from a yard out in the third quarter to give the Panthers a 7-6 victory over El Monte…Bell Gardens Mike Hensley threw a 27-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter to Ray Espinoza to give the Lancers a 17-14 victory over Duarte in a Rio Hondo League contest…And in the fourth quarter at Moor Field, Montebello’s Larry Costello picked off a pass and returned it 33-yards for the game winnning touchdown to give the Oilers a 10-7 victory over Alhambra…

And there was one other score…

Monrovia playing without HC Tom Paton, who was suspended for refusing to shake hands with Rosemead HC Jim Ellis the week before (M-Town won 49-7), defeated San Gabriel 75-0… SAY WHAT!… I said Monrovia beat San Gabriel 75-0.

The Wildcats scored on the first play of the game when quarterback Dale Bunn went 64-yards to Pat Cranor. Obie Graves, Lawrence Jackson, Bunn, and Cranor all scored two touchdowns. Jim Stavroulakis and Dan Ferrell also added touchdowns.

The writer covering the game observed; “…in a game that wasn’t close from the start.”

Stay thirsty my friends…
