It’s a Bell Gardens Party; 37-35

SG had some success with Arthur Brown (22) at quarterback.

(San Gabriel) – Josh Adame threw three touchdown passes and ran for another as Bell Gardens held off San Gabriel 37-35 Friday night in a key Almont League clash.

Chris Gutierrez was on the receiving end of all three of Adame’s TD strikes and all of them were for big yardage. He caught a short pass over the middle and turned it into an 80-yard touchdown in the first quarter to give the Lancers a 14-6 lead. His next touchown pass to Gutierrez was another huge play. Adame hooked up with Gutierrez for 75 yards early in the third. Gutierrez did most of the damage after the catch to give BG a 29-16 lead.

The Adame- Gutierrez connection worked one more time in the fourth as they linked up for a 15 yard score which proved to be the game winner.

Adame finished the night 24-31 for 378 yards and two scores. Gutierrez caught 12 of those passes for 254 yards and three touchdowns.

The Lancers survived several big plays by San Gabriel. The Matadors fought back despite playing with their third string quarterback. Andy Guerrero started and completed six of six passes before going down with an injury late in the second quarter. Eric Alvarez came on and tried to give it a go but he was already injured from the previous game. The Mats played the entire second half with Arthur Brown at quarterback.

Running primarily out of the Wildcat, Brown scored on a touchdown run of 63 yards in the third quarter to get SG to within 29-23. In the first quarter, with Guerrero still in the game, Brown broke off a 49 yard touchdown scamper.

After Gutierrez hauled in a 15 yard pass in the fourth, BG looked like it had the game in hand up 37-23. But San Gabriel battled back when Joey Villalobos returned the ensuing kick off back 66 yards for a score to cut it to 37-29. Then on its next series, Alex Villalobos caught a 43 yard rainbow from Brown in the corner of the end zone to make it 37-35.

The Bell Gardens defense had to stop San Gabriel twice late in the fourth quarter to hold on.

“We knew San Gabriel would score some points. Our defense made a couple of  big stops in the end,” said Bell Gardens Coach David Ramos. “We were lucky that their quarterback got knocked out.”

San Gabriel also surprised Bell Gardens late in the second quarter when a fake punt turned into a 49 yard touchdown run by Gilmar Tenes.

Bell Gardens improved to 2-1 in the Almont League with the victory. San Gabriel fell to 1-2.
