(Baldwin Park)- The Baldwin Park Braves rushed for over 300 yards and six touchdowns, including three unanswered scores on route to defeating the Wilson Wildcats, 49-25, and improving to a 3-1 Valle Vista league record Friday night at Baldwin Park High School.
Wilson only trailed by a field goal early in the third quarter after Josh Morales jumped up and over the goal line, converting a 1-yard quarterback sneak for a touchdown and a 28-25 ball game with 8:08 remaining.
“We had some things go wrong early in the game that we could have quit on,” BP coach Jim Heggins said “But we didn’t. We got them fixed and made a couple of plays.”
Braves countered with an offensive scoring barrage and exploded for three unanswered touchdowns, sparked by a 99-yard kickoff return to the house by BP’s Demetrius Jackson and the score expanded to 49-25 with 9 seconds remaining in the third.
Jackson finished with over 175 total yards and two touchdowns, providing a dynamic weapon for the Braves on special teams with kickoff returns of 99 and 65 yards.
“I’m glad we brought him along today,” said Heggins. “He’s a special kid and you can see why he’s a division one athlete.”
Wardell Crutchfield also added 119 yards on the ground, including one of the Braves six rushing touchdowns.
Wilson running back Moses Vega carried the offensive load for the Wildcats, accumulating 154 yards on 13 carries but didn’t pierce the end zone.
It was Morales who did all the scoring for Wilson, rushing for two 1-yard touchdowns and throwing for two more scores. Morales finished with the game with 142 total yards and all of the Wildcats four touchdowns.
Baldwin Park faces off next week against Nogales.
