La Mirada Qb Shane Blood

(La Mirada) – It was a slow start for La Mirada but a strong finish. After fumbling twice in the opening minutes, the Mats went on to a 42-14 victory Friday night over visiting Mayfair.

Both teams came into the contest undefeated in league but it was La Mirada that imposed its will on the Monsoons with a running attack that racked up 352-yards and six touchdowns. Alex Munoz scored from three, twelve and 58-yards out and Alex Gama had scores of seven and 39-yards.

Mayfair took advantage of the Matadores second fumble when running back Jerry Smith scored from six yards out with seven minutes left in the first quarter.

The Monsoons offense sputtered to end the first and La Mirada took over at its own 21. The Mats gassed the Mayfair offense on a 15 play drive, 12 of them rushes, capped off by Shane Blood’s one-yard quarterback sneak on fourth and inches.

“We ran it well, my line blocked well for me, all I can say is the reason we won the game is because of my O-line. Our defense held it up, and the o-line paved the way,” Blood said.

The Monsoons best play came on an 82-yard pass from Evan Hunko to receiver Theo Chambers cutting the score to 21-14 but that was the closest Mayfair would get as it was shut out in the second half.

Next week La Mirada (5-3, 4-0) plays at Norwalk and Mayfair (5-4, 4-1) hosts Artesia.
