Vikings can finish no worse than 500

(El Monte) – Mountain View secured a non-losing season for the first time since 1997 after the Vikes beat Gabrielino 15-7 Friday night on Homecoming.

In the first quarter it was all defense on both sides. Gabrielino fumbled the ball on its first drive and View recovered. The Vikes turned the ball over on downs and Gabrielino punted the ball back after a fourth down. Mt. View started rushing down the field and got to the Eagles 14 yard line at the end of the first.

Jose Zamora ran up the middle for a four yard touchdown to get the Vikes on the board first to start the second. The fake field goal attempt for a two point conversion was unsuccessful leaving the score at 6-0.

A couple of drives later, after an interception by Jerry Ponce, Jossymar Ulloa and Zamora carried the ball one after the other 7 times until they were stopped with a fourth down in field goal range.

Jesus Ordaz tacked on three with a 32 yard field goal. On the kickoff return Gabrielino could not handle the ball and Raul Avila pounced on it to give the Vikings another chance at three with four seconds left in the half. But the 25 yard attempt was blocked and the score remained 9-0 Vikes at the half.

Ulloa ran for a touchdown from a yard out in the third on a drive that began after Alonzo Mora recovered an Eagle fumble. The two point conversion failed.

The lack of offensive production kept the Eagles from scoring the entire game until their last drive when they scored on a 6 yard touchdown to bring the final score to 15-7.

Ulloa ran for 177 yards and sophomore running back Zamora ran for 101. The Vikings defense held Gabrielino to 131 rushing yards, recovered 2 fumbles, and had 2 interceptions.

Mountain View’s record improved to 5-4 and 2-2 in league. The last time View had a non-losing season was also the last time they had made it into the playoffs.

For the Vikings to have at least some consideration for the playoffs this year, they must do what the rest of the Mission Valley league hasn’t been able to, beat Arroyo. Coach James Wilson is put in the same situation as his first year at the helm in 2005, going into a game against Arroyo at (2-2) in league.

The Tongva tribe travels to the swamp to close out the season as both Eagle teams try to avoid being winless in league.
