“Tradition doesn’t get any better in the valley than right here,” says second year Los Altos HC Felipe Aguilar. “There are always expectations.”

Even after snapping a 14-game losing streak at the end of last season, Aguilar understands its about going forward.

“When you’re a first year head coach there’s a lot of stuff that’s new,” said Aguilar who didn’t get the Conquerors job until May of 2008. “What we want to do is instill excitement. We had a lot of stuff, injuries, and close games last season, but we have a good team.”

Additions in 2009 start on defense with new defensive coordinator Ray Austin and Azusa Pacific alum Miguel Ramos coaching the linebackers.

Back in the fold, after four years at UCLA, is Brigham Harwell who will be coaching the freshmen team.

“That’s very exciting,” said Aquilar. “Can you imagine being a freshman and having Brigham Harwell as your coach?”

Aguilar, a former quarterback, is looking between Sr. Justin Zamona and Jr. David Poyet to be his triggerman.

Talent also returns in Ryan Longoria, Joseph McKeehan, Andrew Yamakawa, and Isaic Ramirez.

In the Miramonte the Conquerors face defending Southeastern champion Charter Oak. Southeastern finalist Diamond Ranch, a strong Bonita program, and a Wilson team under Brian Zavala looking to climb back into the mix.

Still it doesn’t lessen expectations.

“Here its going to the playoffs,” said Aguilar. “And making a run.”
